You make me envious. Asrai No ride. And I even missed a shot of them both sailing up the Williamette under sail with the fireboat leading the parade. There is something about a sail boat that is almost heaven.

Taken at the waterfront in Portland. It is really surprising just how small these boats are.

Hi again, John,
It's funny, I find myself returning to this photo, when I am just poking around, learning about others on this site.

The intricacy of the rigging, alone, is amazing. We, here in Columbus, Ohio, have a 1/3 scale Mayflower. But it is only scale in size, not really a replica. Very simply done. More of a short walk and climb around deal for kids, as Columbus FINALLY tries to build up and encorporate an ideal riverbank setting for parks and even restaraunt/bar businesses. Two fairly (minimally fairly) good sized rivers (the Scioto and Olentangy) which converge directly AT the point of our downtown. But for some reason Columbus has been very slow at using this lovely setting for recreational and beautification projects. I suppose there are the obvious reasons NOT to disturb the banks and small number of wildlife around there, but we do still have plenty of wooded area in the close proximity and the thought of having boat traffic to our amphitheater on the water, eateries, galleries, pubs and small shops etc., would be a tremendous draw to a very nice (albiet behind the times) little, big City.
Anyway, it truly is a lovely pic. and you are correct. There is something magical about a sailboat. Especially the old ones WITH all the masts, riggings and History. Oh, how I would love to visit Boston Harbor and the other New England Cities who have yearly Regatta Celebrations and take in all of that...fireboats and all. Our family's 37 ft cabin cruiser is fun, but it is just a boat. BTW, how old is Lady Washington and do you know any of her history, or is she just an attraction?? I am sorry to go on about a pic from a year ago, but somehow I just kept "noticing" her and didn't take the time to "check her out" til now.
Thanks...if you feel like filling me in a bit on her.
Peace, Lori

For more information on the Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain go to

www.historicalseaport.org/web/lady-Washington.htlml

This is the 1989 reproduction of the 1770's original ship. The Lady Washington was named for Martha Washington, wife of our first president. She was the first American merchant ship to sail from the East Coast and make landfall on the West Coast. She had been built in Massachuetts prior to the American Revolution. She was refitted as a privateer during the Revolution and afterwards return to her merchant status with the Lady Washington name.

Both ships are owned by the Gray's Harbor Seaport group.
