  • Aw shucks, MrWhiteCane....twern't nothing anyone wouldn't have done. Who could stand by and watch anything suffer and not try to do something for them? I can't believe that I was led to that situation at that particular time, NOT to take action.
The mother deer could have attacked me at any time...and several times I thought she was going to....but she didn't. Animals know.

I'd do the same for MOST people I know. ;)

  • Hero's own words!

Honest to goodness! I've just come in from rescuing one of the little deer fawns. I'll make light of the situation...but to tell the truth, I'm still shaken. Main thing is, the little fawn will survive, I hope.

I went outside and heard what I thought was the little fawn crying. They don't usually make that kind of noise unless they're in big trouble. I jumped on the gator and went to investigate. Sure enough, the little one was hung up in some double woven wire fence! To make it worse there was also a strand of electric against it. GOOD GRIEF!! Time for mighty HERO! I 'flew' to the barn to shut off the electric fence...grabbed some wire cutters (useless piece of crap in this situation..but I grabbed them anyway).....'flew' back over to the house to get some long pants and gloves on because I'd have to crawl through about 20 feet of underbrush in the woods to get to her. I could have tried to free her from the field side of the fence, but that would have left me open to an 'angry mama' deer, who may not understand I was trying to help.

    Isn't this dramatic?

The poor little thing was almost limp from struggling and had her hind legs and hip so tangled up she'd never have gotten loose. I worked on her for about 15 mintues before I finally was able to get her loose without breaking her legs or hip...but she did rub off an awful lot of her fur. Wish I'd thought to grab some antibiotics while I was at the barn. Darn.
While this was all going on the Mama Doe was snorting and pacing about five feet behind me in the woods ..but thankfully the underbrush was thick enough she couldn't strike at me with her hoofs. Another deer came running to see what all the commotion was about, so needless to say ...it was a bit chancy.

BUT...when the baby got loose...she took off like a bat outta hell....so hopefully Mama will lick her wounds and life will be good. That fence is coming down!

    Whew what a day.

  • The story is in a private group. But our member GMAWKC heard a dear in the woods distressed. She found a baby caught in an old barbed wire fence. KC, as we call her, went an got tools that didn't help but stayed even though the mom dear and others had assembled. She slowly unwrapped the poor dear deer and freed it saving it's life!
So she is our hero for sure. I Boomed this photo hoping more folks will get to hear about our hero!
