Volunteers on the Earthwatch expedition Puerto Rico's Rainforest work with Dr. Mark Nelson and the other researchers at Las Casas de la Selva, helping them figure out how to create a sustainable forestry industry.
Volunteers hike and climb through the forest, finding hardwoods and taking measurements of undisturbed and disturbed areas. They also do a night survey of endangered coqui frogs, search the leaf litter for frog eggs and tiny newborn frogs, no bigger than a fingernail.
In this photo, a volunteer peers up at the canopy, holding a tape to measure the spread of a tree's branches.
