This term refers to the general process by which people use computer-based communication to connect, collaborate, and form communities through the internet. This networking includes early electronic tools such as e-mail, instant messaging and online mailing lists, as well as more recent conventions such as web pages, blogs, and wikis. Most recently, online networking has been facilitated by the creation of "social software" in which people register, create profiles, and selectively create an online community. Social network sites vary in emphasis and encompass a range of purposes such as business networking, dating, social events, and recreational hobbies.
