Job coaching is a one-to-one working relationship in which an employee works with another individual to improve job related behaviors and tasks. The job coach helps the employee set specific learning goals and supports those goals by job observing, providing feedback, teaching, and serving as a sounding board. Job coaching has a distinct developmental focus. It is different from performance management in which the goal is evaluation of results. Both processes are complementary. Managers often try to balance both roles, but in some cases, job coaching is provided by an external consultant or another colleague in the organization.
