Wassily Kandinsky - The First Abstract Painter

The Russian born artist, Wassily Kandinsky (1886-1944), himself an accomplished musician, once said “Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”

Sir Isaac Newton along with other scientists were intrigued by Kandinsky's concept of the long historical link between color and musical harmony.

He taught at the Bauhaus School of Art in Germany for more than a decade. The Bauhaus was raided by the Nazis and the art was displayed in a state-sponsored exhibit entitled 'Degenerate Art'. Kandinsky's work along with works by Paul Klee and Franz Marc were destroyed at the close of the exhibit.

Credited with being the first abstract painter, Kandinsky, along with August Macke and Franz Marc formed Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) a group of like-minded artists in France where he lived out his life.

Enjoy.
