About me
I came to Buddhism around 1961 after having been an agnostic since around 11 years old. I began reading the existentialists and then began reading Eastern philosophy in my late teens when I disovered a strong affinity to Zen, in particular, from reading the Beats. And so began my slow, off and on journey into Buddhist thought.
I've also studied Hinduism and can relate because Buddhism grew out of this. I particularly have a strong affection for Sathya Sai Baba and through his mental gifts to me, I began understanding the 'one consciousness'. Many Deep Gashos to Baba.
I've worked as a drug counselor until I got burnout syndrome..and then decided to drive a cab in Miami and that's how I met my husband.
Before moving to Homestead and retiring my husband and I owned a taxi and limo company and drove for many years in Miami.
We lived on the Island of Key Biscayne which was a sleepy village when we moved there. Now, it's home to many mansions, high-rise condo enclaves and it was time, after 22 years, to leave and so we find ourselves in Homestead.
I love living where, in 15 minutes, I can be in the Everglades. Where, in 2 minutes, I can be out in the vegetable fields. The Homestead area provides around 1/3 of the nation's winter vegetables, tropical fruit and more not to mention all the tree farms around here, and flower nurseries. Love seeing the trucks loaded with tomatoes, beans or squash driving down the main streets through town, and I love Homestead Air Reserve Base because the F16's and 18's fly over our house on their way back home a few miles to the northeast of us. Can't help it...I love fighter planes...wish I could fly one.
I never considered myself as an administrator but I guess that's what happened after retirement. :-) Even though I wanted to kick back and focus on making art when we moved here, I find myself involved in decision making of two local non-profit organizations. I think I have to be grateful for this opportunity to keep exercising the brain. The phrase "Use it or lose it" applies here.
Vice President of a local art club and gallery and Chairman of a lecture series where, along with 6 others, we plan different lectures of cultural interest given 9 times every year.
