More about me

grew up in phx/tempe. moved across the street five years ago from a woman that i went to middle school with. very sweet person. she died last year from a brain tumor. i'm pretty good friends with her husband.

growing up here, one kinda neat achievement, i was fastest 12 yr old white kid in the state in 8th grade. This was barefoot on a hard pack dirt track. The first place black kid went on to NFL with Atlanta, the 2nd place brown kid i lost track of. Ran against the black kid in high hurdles occasionally in hs. i still have the 3rd place medal.

art school at ASU and finished at Towson in Baltimore. married young gal i grew up with. we saved our dough and backpacked EU in '74. stayed at Shakespeare and Company, Paris one week in 'honeymoon suite' as George called it. He thought our old fashioned growing up together was most interesting.

came back from there, i had surgery, she joined the Army! I was too liberated to say " no, bad idea." She got stationed at Ft. Meade, worked in NSA. I got kicked out of Ft. Meade Arts and Crafts Center. (while getting an art degree, funny huh) And walking around Ft. Meade with a pony tail was kinda weird. But the Army was too much for our marriage. She's remarried, still to same guy.

Still have great friends in Baltimore. One is due to have a baby soon!

'83 went back to school for arch. grew up with it in the family -older brother in law, arch in Anchorage said 'about time." turned 30, "i need a career". man it was a long slog. there were 8 at 30 in my class of 50. ASU admitted 50 to upper division ea year. 25 to grad school . so we kinda ran the program. I couldnt keep up in flag football, but did other stuff: editor of school news journal, set up the gallery exhibits, curriculum committee, taught beginning drawing for a couple years, etc. It's been ok, but would not do it again. Thought about comm art, but wanted to keep fine art 'mark making' seperate from job. dont like arch renderings for style much either, but i do quick ones for others on occasion to make extra cash.

my painting/drawing has gone from the ability to draw almost photorealistically, 'plaids on the shirts' to a 3 years old. i do lots of tiny naturalistic landscapes when hiking. and portriat sketches of the kids in the family for the parents-make good presents at odd times. i'm behind, the family's growth has gotten ahead of me!

I've proposed 3 times, and been proposed to 3 times since. Last relationship was 9 years ago, but only for 6 mos. Amazing gal, a 'keeper', but she dumped me . She'd been living with an alcoholic artist before me, sure that had something to do with it. I'm not an alcoholic. She wasnt either, btw.

Worked in Bay Area, lin early 90's, lived with a woman there. Came back to Phx after S&L crash. Absolutely no work there. Fantastic office in Palo Alto that the principals ran into the ground. They were 'cashing out'. No development money. But did alot of work on the Bay Area Childrens Discovery Museum. Very satisfying to go back and see it filled with munchkins running around being nuts and having fun.

Commuted between Phx and Flagstaff for 6 mos. Lived in loft in d-twn Flag. Watched Forrest Gump being filmed below me. Didnt recognize Tom Hanks in the long hair and beard. Filmed the 'shit happens' scene at that location. I was being a pest hanging out the window waving when they were shooting.

Lived in Jerome, AZ for 6 mos. Former abandoned mining town in N AZ. Then a cabin for 1 1/2 yrs on a bluff  overlooking Oak Creek and John McCain's summer home. I could hit the roof with a rock. Not cool to have secret service search your cabin every 6 mos when he would have a fundraiser.

Came back to Phx, worked in school design firm. Psycho boss. But guy that hired me was one of nicest guys ever met. Schizoid office environment. Went out on own for a few months, 9-11 happened at that time.

Then got job running a firm that specilized in Municipal Recreation Pools. Neat projects. Designed 3. An existing pool to be demo'd had a closing day 'Dog Day'. So only dogs were allowed to swim. It was nuts! I think 300 dogs at a time. Like a bunch of 3 yr olds. Really fun! The dog diving competition was won by a dog that dove to the bottom at 15' to bring back a ball.

since then, on own, out of my house. lots of little stuff. not much design. not very fulfilling, but better than psycho bosses. everytime i decide to interview, i either dont get hired or get the creeps. maybe not fit, nor have proper skills for large offices now. pretty active in professional stuff.

I'm pres of  neighborhood association. one more year. then someone else can do it. keeps me pretty busy with knee-jerk stuff. a yard full of weeds 24" high should be a no brainer right? a backyard full of trash 6' high, home to many rats, shouldn't be a problem to get authorities to clean it up, right? uh, no. everything takes months. neighborhood is on edge of declining or improving always. But still a pretty good part of town. not wealthy. but lots of good neighbors. When the weather is cooler, we gather for wine often on my front patio in evenings. Potlucks, etc. A few with kids, not many. But that seems to be turning over, getting younger families with kid potential. good!

I have bunchave quite a few friends, all the way back to grade school. Some family here too, but not alot of contact other than with one older brother. He has a lot of family. So i'm the wierd, unmarried uncle.

Still do a little painting, but not often. Need to work that out soon. promised myself to have two large canvases i started years ago fininshed by next march for 'Art by Architects' exhibit. I'm a 3-peat Juror's Award, going for 4 in a row. But considering the competition.......not really a big deal. Did exhibit series of watercolors on comtemp dace in '00. last solo exhibit. sold several, gave the rest away to family.

headed out of town next weekend to Tahoe. Talked buddy into buying a 24' sailboat. he makes alot more than i do. also has a very small condo but came with slip. I'll sleep on the boat, so he and wife can have privacy still,  for a week and sail as often as possible. Professional conference too, so can write it off.

I learned to sail in Golden Gate. Crewed on a 24' j-baot for 2 years. skipper was again, one of the nicest guys ever. really a pleasure to learn from someone like that.

Something special about moving over the water with wind only. plus boats are so pretty. even the ugly ones like mine. i have a small boat. not a big fan of motor boats only. altho i skiied behind 327 and 454 ci skiboats as a kid. sailboats have engines too. but best to move without all that noise, etc.

Plan is to retire to a marina and have a palapa/shack/studio on shore to dry out and work. make enough money to augment typ cash flow from other sources.

breakfast time. ran out of coffee yesterday. gotta go!
