I came from a family of 8 children and grew up in a little town in Oregon most people have never heard of called Drain. We were divided when my parents divorced and I was the oldest girl so I became 'mom' being raised by my father who won custody. He was ill and disabled by the age of 30, and survived on disability. So we were, obviously, very poor. I'm talking poor. (Laughing), No, you don't know poor. You think you know poor, you don't know poor. However, to that fact I give credit to all the real abundances and blessings I've ever had since.

We were very close as a family and my favorite memories are probably the toughest times. Daddy (I never grew out of that) was raising 5 of us from his nearly bedridden position and managed to run the household no matter how his health diminished. He was the captain of our ship and we obeyed and respected his rules. That amazes me now, as I look back and look at parenthood around me, and the challenges I've faced as a mom. But, it's true, and even in spite of his circumstances, we were fairly well mannered kids. He managed to instill strong family values, responsibility, and character in each of us, which we all agree is why we are who we are today. The best parts of me are from my dad, (at least I think so).

Family has always been my main priority. I wanted to have tons of children and have a big happy family. As a girl I was mature for my age, due to being responsible for 4 younger sisters from the age of 8. I have a brother who was exactly to the day one year older. We shared our birthday. He always referred to me as is first birthday present.

With all that, I finally married who I thought was my soul mate at 28, had only 1 child at 30, and wow, he just turned 18 this year and graduated from high school.  He is worth everything to me. I feel so lucky to have him. I have always loved and adored children, but he is amazingly easy and a joy for a child. He is turning into the young man I dreamed of raising, while the whole time, fearing I was not doing it right. He is creative, has his own head, strong (god is he strong, willed I mean). So, that's it in a nutshell, and here's to moving forward.

    Hi Snoopi,
I live in Beaverton too. I have several friends online that live in my state. While we never actually meet we have our weather and events in common. I was intrigued by your story. I was the oldest of seven younger kids but we were all separated out and didn't fare as well as you and your siblings did. Poverty is harsh but can be okay as long as family can stay intact. We were poor but lost each other. Would you like to be friends?
