Places I've been

I lived in England for several years when I was growing up, and I go back as often as possible. I've traveled to Japan to visit my Japanese "sons" (former exchange students). I've visited Sicily, where my father was born, several times. I was in England for several weeks in June and July 2008, and now it's time to see more of this country!

Hello, friends ~

I'm a pretty contented person, except when I read the paper or the political blogs.  (I've had to ration myself on the latter -- I was mad all the time.)  I work as a social worker with abused and neglected children.  I retired in May 2008, but then  went back part-time.  it's a perfect arrangement -- I'm still doing what I love, but from home and on my own schedule. I'm Irish and Sicilian, and have visited Sicily several times.  It's a complicated and fascinating place.

Politically and religiously I am pretty liberal, but ethically I am conservative. I believe in keeping promises and cleaning up one's own messes.  I am very glad that I am not trying to raise children in this culture.  I have 3 sons and 3 grandsons.  I love to laugh, and fortunately there is still lots to laugh about.  Did you hear that Cheney went out trick or treating, dressed as Darth Vader?  He ran into Darth Vader, who was dressed as Dick Cheney!

Walking, my book group, computer games, movies (especially non-blockbusters), concerts (especially BSO rehearsals)

Favorite Charities

I decided 2 years ago that I would only support local charities (land conservation, food banks, the local hospice). I like to see where my money is going and the national charities spend an awful lot of money on salaries and fund raising. The only exception is the Salvation Army.

Favorite Music

Classical, old-time rock and roll (did you know that the oldies stations are playing music from the 80's??), bluegrass, Celtic

Favorite TV Shows

Don't watch much TV. I like House, but even that is getting a little formulaic.

Too many! Plain Song, Angle of Repose, anything by Bill Bryson or Laurie R. King
