    About Me

I grew up in Gloucester, MA. My grandfather was a schooner captain who was considered a highliner- that means he was one of the best fishing captains Out O'Gloucester. My grandfather was skipper of the camera boats in the original versions of Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) and Captains Courageous (1937) that filmed the action scenes. I've written a four part series for the American Schooner Association about the filming of those two movies.

Naturally I grew up on boats, beginning at age 3. I first began working on tuna boats at age 9 or 10. Eventually I even got paid as a mate. I caught my first tuna fish, bluefin, at age 11. It weighed-in at 80 pounds. The biggest one I ever caught was 622 when I was 16. I fished to earn money through college. In fact, I was captain of a boat named the Tightline, when the daughter of a cosmetic surgeon caught her world record blueshark- 410lbs on 80 pound test line in 1967. That record still stands. In 1968 I graduated, just bearly, form VMI at which time I was commissioned as an Infantry Second Lieutenant, USA. Then the rest of my life began...

After entering the army I graduated from Airborne and Ranger Schools, thence to the 82nd Airborne Division at Bragg and onward to the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the live-fire FTX where I did not move fast enough and got hit by shrapnel from a booby trap. After that exciting experience I went to Germany serving two years in Heidelberg where our girl-boy twins, both at the time blonde and blue-eyed, were born. Blonde and blue-eyed twins opened many doors for us when we walked around the environs of Berlin where we spent two more years.
I need to pause here while I think about how I’m going to continue this little story. Consider it Part the First of RD’s saga.
