My grandma name was Ellen Martin . When i was young but old enough to do things . I would rush down to grandma's house early in the morning . She would be getting up to fire up the wood cook stove . She would get a piece of rich pine . (where me and her would go into the pine thickets and look for pine stumps that over time were full of rich tar that was used for kindlin) Tack a small hatchet and cut into small splinters . Take a match , light it and put it under the wood . That got the fire going . The cook stove had a basin on the side to heat water . The oven would make the best biscuits . She always had a dish of fried taters and green beans to stick between a biscuit . Oh so good . Some times she would fix grits or rice with red eye gravy . Or fry up a little tenderloin . Grandma would make handmade quilts so rich in color . Her lady friend would come over and all start sewing on the quilt and so much story telling while they sewed . They had a cow who was so gentle . I would watch her milk and i soon learned how to milk a cow . Now that was something to see . Grandma would take the milk and each morning skim off the rich cream that would form over the night . When she got enough cream saved , out her butter churn came . I got to churn the milk and make the yellow butter . She had a thing to put the butter in and make a pretty print on top . Grandma would sell the milk , butter and eggs to have spending money . In the spring they would have a big garden plus acre's of corn , sugar cane for molasses , acre's of cotton to take to the Cotton Gin . That money is what got them through the hard winters back then . My grandpa worked in the sawmill later on . In the evening's we would either set on the porch swing or out in the yard and listen to grandpa play the Harmonica . Also we all would have contest and see who would fart the longest and laugh so hard you would want to roll on the ground . Oh! those were the days . After i grew up my Grandmother was the one person i could set and talk to . She actually would sit and listen and give sound advice to me . I never could talk to my Mother like that . Don't know why just couldn't . Written by Wayne (onetooth)
When i was young and started going to church around 1957. I would take my bike and there was a path that you could take like a short cut . There was a place on that trail where people in the area said Tom Dooley was hanged . ( There is a song called "The Legend Of Tom Dooley") . Anyhow i would make it to the Baptist Church and i enjoyed going to church . I was skinny and everyone treated me well . After church was over i would ride my bike back home taking the paved road . Soon after in 1960 we moved and that ended going to that church . By then i was getting chunky and that is where my problem of shyness took over . I soon started going to a Methodist Church . I was so scared of talking to people . I would go to my Sunday school class and they would go down the line and each would read a verse in the Bible . When it was my turn i would try and read my verse . I would stutter and everyone would look my way making me feel like a tiny ant in a huge room about to be stepped on . People would snicker at me . That it self caused me not to go to church much . It affected me later in life about being around people . My shyness has for the most part kept me from attending church like i wanted too . Mom loved going to church and after dad died i would take her out to the little church and go back later to pick her up . One day when i took her out there . Some one had the speaker system turned on . I sit there and listened to the service . by the end of the service i had so many tears flowing . I wanted to be in there but my shyness took over and prevented me from attending . After my mom died i tried going back to that church and was doing well . I couldn't stand up when the other's did and that played a part later in not going back . I would sing with the rest and maybe some could here me singing and they would turn around and see who was singing . I got to where i would just sing in silence and soon just give up . I can not say i am a saved person in most people's view of me because i don't attend Church . I was baptised many years ago and do believe i did it for the right reason . My love of God has grown over the years and i do pray . God has provided all the thing's i really need in life and if i didn't get the other thing's then i didn't need them any how . Since i joined eon's my love of God has grown more each day . The friend's i have made and the other member have taken me out of my shell and i feel at ease talking too and all the wonderfull kind word's i get each day keeps me going . I do pray too God that i may some day make it to Heaven where i shall only be judged by God himself . I know there may be some that do not believe in God and how the earth was created . This was writen from how i feel and believe and for anyone that happens by too read and don't like what i wrote so be it . Written by , Wayne (Onetooth)
