About

More about me
I didn't realize when I took the age test , which I saw on Martha Steewart, that this site came with it. I am at a cross roads in my life. I am very unhappy with my profession , have not worked in several months, and am trying to find a job I really love. I used to be in horticulture, but when I got divorced,I could not find a job that paid enough to support my family. I have 4 sons, youngest is 14,oldest is 28. I went to nursing school, but did not realize that my "other" degree would not count as a degree in nursing.I wanted to be a midwife and did not find this out until I was halfway through the nursing program. So I have an AA in nursing. Many jobs I am qualified for now require a Masters in Nursing. I have 20 years experience in high risk OB and case management . It is very frustrating and my heart wants to be outside and in a greenhouse .But now , even though I have taught a class in plant propagation several years ago, redid the visitors garden at Ft. McHenry with a group of students from an economically deprived area (summer work study program), I still can't find a job cause I have been out of the loop so long.I recently applied for a job as director of the Hort program at the school where I taught the class, but it too requires a masters. I am going to be 54 on Mon . and don't want to go back to school. My dream job would be working as a green consultant and planning green roofs ,but need to have on the job training. But don't know where to get it. Hillary says she will create green jobs, so go Hillary!.

I can relate. I'm 59 and a CPA but never worked in public accounting (so no experience there!) but worked for non-public companies my whole career, the last 19 or so as a CFO. I haven't worked for a year now and only worked half of the previous year as a contractor. I'm sick of what I do although it would be fine in a related but different position, one which would not take up all of my available time. I was divorced in 1998 and my two kids (27 and 24) are grown, although the younger one has returned to live at home, at least for a while. Guess I'm still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I don't even have hobbies I'm passionate about - there never was any time for that, it was always family and career.

Have you considered your State's agricultural extension office? Florida has one and Maryland probably does too. If that doesn't work out you can always do more volunteer work in a public or private garden or conservatory. We have a gorgeous place in Orlando called Leu Gardens which in addition to extensive gardens and a historical house (great for weddings, etc.) also has classes on horticulture. A position in that type facility might not be as hard to get and you will get something current in the field for your resume.

    Good luck!

Hang in there- I know how hard it is to find work that pays well in the field you love. I don't have any answers for you as I am in much the same boat.
Just wanted to say- you are not alone!
    Welcome!
