History

Places I've been
Born in Anderson, SC. Raised mostly in Liberty, SC (Hometown), Traveled all over the world while serving in the Navy. Trained in Orlando, FL and Great Lakes, IL (just north of Chicago). Served aboard 2 ships in Norfolk, VA. During those tours, we traveled to US Virgin Islands (St. Croix was my favorite), Iran (pre-Ayatollah), Pakistan, Seychelles Islands, Israel, and Australia. Transferred to Washington, DC (met my wife there). Later transferred to Japan (served there for 7 years). More recently, we took a family vacation and visited Luray Caverns, Watkins Glen, NY (drove the track there), Niagara Falls, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If you've never been, you need to see the falls - absolutely spectacular. If you are a R&R fan, don't miss the Hall of Fame.

About me

If you read my history, you'll see that I have traveled extensively. You will also see that I been a public servant for most of my professional life. Whether that matters or not makes little difference, it is what I have done, and I regret very little of it.

This month I officially retired from the Columbia Fire Department. Congratulations are not necessary - it was not by choice. I was diagnosed with epilepsy in November 2006 and finally had to take a disability retirement this month. Rather than rewrite it here, you can read about my fire department career in the Disaster Preparedness group.

Although I am a born, bred, died in the wool "Johnny Reb", I married a Yankee from DeeeTroit and brought her back down heuh! Somehow, we have managed to raise 3 terrific boys - two now in college and the youngest an aspiring chef in his high school's culinary arts program.

"Now that I'm gettin' older so much older" (John Mellencamp), I'm trying to find ways to actually pursue some of the things that interest me. I've always been interested in sports cars and road racing - not a big NASCAR fan, though. I'm volunteering to work early next month at a 3 day race being held here at Carolina Motorsports Park. It's a process that I hope eventually leads to me pursuing an amateur racing career at age 52. I actually got to drive 3 laps at the course in Watkins Glen, NY. It wasn't high speed, but still pretty cool.

That's me right now. I'll add, delete, modify, cut, paste, chop, spindle, and mutilate as I see fit and the mood strikes me.
