I grew up in a household where both parents were present. My parents married as teenagers as they did so often in times past. They stayed married until my dad's death in 1997. I must say when he dead I realized he was the glue that held us together. He made all the hard decisions and he was the rock.
Unlike my parents, I married and stayed married for only 14 years then divorced and have been divorced 12+ years. I realized early on that I learned to be independent and to depend on my self for my needs. I watched my mom raise us and she never really worked which was a very good thing for us to come home from school and she was there preparing dinner. However, the generation I came up in I watched women divorce and have nothing to fall back on.
I decided that going to college and being able to take care of me was paramount to my being successful in life so I pursued that course, with a few bumps in the road. Time has mellowed me and You see the product of a lot of bad choices, with the one focus being able to take care of me and my children without help because I knew I would not get it monetarily or otherwise.
As they say when life deals you lemons make lemonade and I did. I have three beautiful children and one granddaughter. My focus after obtaining my degree shifted to the family. The career I thought was all so important was not, as compared to keeping my family close to me and helping them deal with the divorce and their father never coming to see them.
I knew I could never replace the hurt they felt, I just tried to explain you still have one parent me and I will never leave you I promise. I have two sons and it has been a rocky road and still is. My oldest ended up being diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and a light went on as to why he was acting the way he was. I have devoted my time to making sure he is stable and on his meds and he functions as anyone else.
I spend alot of time with my family and the lemons have made the family reunity into the lemonade we have today.....
