More about me

I am a biology professor in northeastern Pennsylvania.  At the university I teach courses in animal behavior and evolution.  By training I am a bird behavioral ecologist. For the last 20+ years, my research has focused on the mating and reproductive behavior and ecology of field sparrows.  I am getting close to retirement now, and toward that end my wife and I have purchased my family's summer cottage in Bear Lake, Michigan.  We will be building a year-round home and retiring there within the next 5 years. 

I love anything having to do with nature and spend, not only my research time, but also most of my fun time there.  I have been a long time nature photographer - you can see my work at:

Favorite Movies

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, The Deer Hunter, Midnight Run, anything by the Coen brothers - Fargo and No Country For Old Men are their best. And I love movies that focus on natural scenery to some degree: David Lean epics (Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, etc.), A River Runs Through It, Out of Africa, Legends of the Fall, At Play in the Fields of the Lord, Last of the Mohicans.

Favorite TV Shows

CSI, Rockford Files, Seinfeld - As you can see; I don't watch much currently on TV, mainly just movies.

Activities

Anything in nature, hiking, canoeing, camping, birdwatching, nature photography. Online I am a regular player of Acrophobia at view link and Boggle at view link

Rock primarily, love the Beatles, but am also a Deadhead and a Parrothead. Celtic and Southern Caribbean (SOCA) are also favorites.

Science fiction - Dune series by Frank Herbert and continued by his son. Alistair Reynolds, Dan Simmons, Robert Charles Wilson, and John Brunner are also favorite authors

Favorite Places

Northern lower Michigan, the Pacific northwest. Any of the still relatively natural Caribbean islands: e.g. Dominica (the best one), Trinidad, St. Vincent, Grenada. I have also enjoyed the beauty of Central America - the 2 best places to go are Belize and Costa Rica.

Favorite Animals

Birds - spent my life studying them - the past 20+ years have focused on aspects of the breeding biology of a population of field sparrows in ne Pennsylvania.
