    Places I've been
Cleveland, Ohio, USA (Hometown), At the age of three months, my family left Cleveland, and I spent my childhood as an Army brat, living in Frankfurt, Germany; Huntsville, Alabama; Aberdeen, Maryland; Ft. Knox, Kentucky; and Heidleberg, Germany. My father retired in the Washington, DC, area, and since I graduated from high school there and lived there professionally as a journalist for 40 years, I consider myself mostly a Washingtonian.

    About me

Check out LifeDreams of many Eons members, and you’ll find travel is a consistent theme.

Well, I’m from Washington, and I’m here to help you.

Actually, that’s not quite true—I lived in Washington, DC, for nearly 40 years, but I moved to St. Paul, MN, three-and-a-half years ago.

But I’m still here to help you. During more than three decades as an investigative reporter—first for the Washington Post and later for a variety of magazines—I traveled constantly. I really got serious about it more than 15 years ago when I became a consumer travel commentator for what was then a new, evening business show on public radio called “Marketplace.”

I adopted the moniker “The Savvy Traveler,” and, unbeknownst to me at the time, that marked the beginning of a new career path. Gradually, traveling and writing about travel began to monopolize my professional life. Today, I’m a contributing editor with National Geographic Traveler magazine as well as the host and co-executive producer of a 65-part, public television series on travel to Europe and the Pacific Rim. See RudyMaxa.com.

Which is why Eons asked me to write travel blogs.

I’m going to riff on travel and share with you ideas, advice and observations. And I’m going to try to answer your questions. While I can’t plan travel itineraries, I may be able to steer you in the right direction. Just ask. Post your questions in our group, Rudy's Savvy Travel Group

    • Thank you for adding me to your list of friends!

I recently caught a retelecast of your Pacific Rim Travels where you island hopped, including the Big Island ("my" island), and you looked like a Kama`aina (local born) to me!

Thanks for sharing all your wonderful travel adventures with us!

    • Love to talk, eat and sleep travel...that can often be a monalogue on an island where some people have never seen the mainland or let alone been to a neighbor island. My favorite building in the world is Saint Basel's (sp) in Red Square. I was in Moscow when it was still under communism so maybe it just struck me deeply because it was so forbidden at that time. The Ganges River in Varanace (sp) is another place that I found life changing because you not go only go across space to get there but also in time. I'd love to chat about the real Hawaii sometime - a place being destroyed by the present like the lava on Kilauea destroys life. Thanks for sharing your travel xperiences. Why MN?

      Aloha,
