We’ve moved around the country following my hubby's profession: Pittsburgh, PA (one of our favorite cities), Washington, DC (our least favorite location as Nixon was President then and Watergate was in full swing, everyone was paranoid about everybody else), Tucson, AZ (our most favorite city), Dallas, TX (an OK place out on the edge of the Great Plains), and finally here in St. Petersburg, FL, three years ago. St. Petersburg is the most convenient city that we have lived in. Our house is about ten blocks from downtown; lots of art galleries, antique shops, and really interesting malls. The summer weather here is almost identical to that of Dallas – hot and humid. A common sight on the sidewalks and streets are motorized wheelchairs/scooters. Also, I think there is someone on every block who owns a motorcycle – there are lots of them zooming around. The Dali Museum is here (he was a very strange man and his art reflects that). The Chihuly glass collection is coming here next year – a special building is being constructed for it. Be sure to check out his web site to see many of his stunning art pieces. view link . Also see this breathtaking installation in Monaco. view linkinstallations/marlborough/Art/monaco02B.html I saw a piece similar to this in Dallas in the lobby of UT Southwestern Medical Center. I could hardly take my eyes off it. The one thing that we do miss here is a regular opera season. Dallas has an excellent opera company. We regularly attended the performances. For fun, we once flew to Chicago to hear Mozart's Don Giovanni, reportedly the best production in many years. We even sat directly behind Roger Ebert! After retirement, my hubby and I were planning to retire in Costa Rica. We had spent a month there doing research and enjoying the country. However, our adult daughter was hit by a drunk driver that resulted in serious brain damage. Even after two years of rehab, she still has no short term memory (sometimes as short as a minute or two), is partially blind, and functions at about the level of a twelve year old. She has lived with Paul and me since she came home from rehab in 1999. Carol participates in a weekly Special Olympics bowling program and an art program.

Retired RN. A diploma graduate from nursing school in 1960. Graduated from the University of Arizona 1986 with a BSN. I loved going back to school as an older adult. I got to know my instructors – they were all very stimulating and encouraging about exploring further resources and learning. The most special thing about the U of A was the library – it’s one of the top 10 libraries in the country. I once did a paper on the cinematographic aspect of the writings of Thomas Hardy (The Return of the Native, Tess of the D’Urbervilles, and Far from the Madding Crowd). The library actually had four(!) books that I could use as research material.
My most inspiring instructor was an English Professor, Scott Momaday, a Pulitzer Prize winning author. He is a Kiowa Native American and a fascinating individual. My favorite classes in nursing school were Nursing Theory and Nursing Research.
Based on my later research at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, TX, I had two professional papers published, one in Nursing Administration (a juried journal) and one in Home Health Nursing. I was also editor of the Parkland Hospital (in Dallas) Nursing Research Committee Newsletter and later, the Texas Nursing Informatics group.
What did I do when I retired in 1999? I put my watch in a drawer and haven’t worn it since. I went to the library and checked out ten books – science fiction, naturally; bought a recliner; started walking seriously again; joined the local library quilting group. We quilted an assortment of antique and modern quilts. I also started to explore the joys of gardening. I’m still gardening; however, my major activity seems to be pulling weeds. Thank goodness for Round-Up.
I am a dilettante artist – charcoal, pencil and pastels. It’s a lovely feeling to stand back and contemplate a completed painting. I paint only for myself and family members.
I had a recumbent tricycle when we lived in Dallas. I thoroughly enjoyed the bike but finally sold it as I was too nervous riding in traffic. My current aspiration is to learn to kayak.
Contrary to the current fashion, I do not have a tattoo!
