Navy brat; Vietnam-era Navy veteran with service in OSD Security and BuPers; mother of an adult child, named after Bob Dylan, who is married to Natalie Portman's lookalike; grandmother of Jake, 6, Jordan, 4, and Ben, 18 months. married 3 times, first time to my son's father, a physicist; second time to a nice archaeologist born the year I graduated from HS; third time to my HS sweetheart, an attorney, whom you see in the photo titled "judy & larry, sittin' in a tree..." third time is the charm: I rag him that I knew I was supposed to marry him the moment I met him; he was a bit slow on the uptake and thought I just didn't fit into his plans. boy, was he wrong! because of him, I also have 2 adult stepdaughters and a stepgrandson.
careerwise, it's been a mixed bag for me: after the service, I was a SAHM, doing full-time volunteer work at the local humane society. that turned into a professional career managing vet clinics & humane organizations as both a vet tech and a feline behaviorist with my own specialty business. I had to give up working with animals because - as it turns out - I have Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus, and I just couldn't afford the risk to my health anymore. although I'm retired, I still do behavioral consulting.
once I left off working with cats, I became an administrative professional - which sometimes entailed secretarial work, sometimes writing copy for ad agencies, sometimes supervising support staff, and most recently editing & writing for a health organization magazine. now I'm just a kept woman, and boy, is he glad he's keeping me!
I'm a bookaholic, and proud of it; my favorite genres are ancient and medieval history, science and science fiction/fantasy, and poetry. my favorite poets are e.e. cummings, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and myself. sometimes I'm forced out of a deep sleep to put words onto paper; usually it's a poem, but occasionally it's part of a short story collection about a group of city cats, called "Around the Corner, Down the Block."
I have a strong and passionate interest in all things military, especially bladed weapons. that probably explains my interest and involvement in hack'n'slash role-playing scenarios on- and off-line. the facts that I'm an Aries, born in March, and as a child lived near the temple of Hachiman, Shinto god of war, may also play a part in my aggressive nature. yes, blood red is my favorite color.
I also like diamonds. my husband makes sure that interest is fulfilled.
I have always been active in whatever church I belong to, and am a big proponent of lay ministry. my theology is fairly iconoclastic, however, and leans heavily towards social justice and non-trinitarianism. when asked, I like to say I'm existentialist Taoist non-trinitarian christian. politically, I'm closer to a socialist than anything else, and I take a lot of cr*p for it from my conservative Republican mother, son, and husband. where did they go wrong? they all ask.
I love France and almost all things French. I speak French fairly fluently, due to having studied it since I was 12. I also speak German, and can make myself understood in Spanish. my BA is in Languages, and I got my degree in 1992 at the age of 45 while running my own business. I started an MBA, but a couple of marriages got in the way.
you can read my blog to learn about my interest in music, if you're interested. now I'm going to go play with my kitten.

You can't get a leopard to change his spots. In fact, now that I come to think of it, you can't really get a leopard to appreciate the notion that it has spots. You can explain it carefully to the leopard, but it will just sit there looking at you, knowing that you are made of meat. After a while it will perhaps kill you. -- Geoffrey K. Pullum
