Nicholas Roerich

The pursuit of refinement and beauty was sacred for Roerich. He believed that although earthly temples and artifacts may perish, the thought that brings them into existence does not die but is part of an eternal stream of consciousness — man's aspirations nourished by his directed will and by the energy of thought. Finally, he believed that peace on Earth was a prerequisite to planetary survival and the continuing process of spiritual evolution, and he exhorted his fellow man to help achieve that peace by uniting in the common language of Beauty and Knowledge.

The existence in unicorns has been questioned since ancient times. There is a legend that said he was the animal first named by Adam in the garden of Eden and the one most beloved. When Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden, the unicorn was given the choice to stay in the garden and never die, or to go out into the world with man where death, and all the other tribulations of the real world would occur. It hesitated only a moment before choosing to follow Adam and Eve, and in doing so, it too became destined to a future marked by human greed, treachery, and exploitation.

Japanese Unicorn
The Japanese unicorn, or Kirin, could detect guilt and would punish the guilty with death. The idea of a one-homed creature became so solid a fixture in predicting births and deaths and served as a warning that the guilty will surely be punished. Whatever the reasons, the unicorn was an important part of oriental culture.
In China and Japan the k'i-lin is a solitary animal who walks with measured tread though some say the k'i-lin skips. The male is called the k'i, while the female is the lin. No one knows for sure how the unicorn was born, but some say the k'i-lin sprang from the center of the earth.

Unicorns were thought to have magical abilities that enabled them to escape from tall enclosures, but of all the things they can do, it seems we are most fascinated by their power to heal. For the touch of a unicorn's horn can pull us away from death, toward immortality. Unfortunately for the unicorn, the horn retains its power even without a unicorn attached which has led people to hunt it rather ferociously. (Though some people also believe there is a precious jewel, a "carbuncle," hidden underneath the horn)
Traditional Unicorn
The unicorn is a legendary creature embodied like a horse, but slender and with a single - usually spiral - horn growing out of its forehead (whence its name - cornum being Latin for 'horn'). Though the popular image of the unicorn is that of a white horse differing only in the horn, the traditional unicorn has a billy-goat beard, a lion's tail, and cloven hoofs, which distinguish him from a horse. Interestingly, these modifications make the horned ungulate more realistic, since only cloven-hoofed animals have horns. Marianna Mayer has observed, "The unicorn is the only fabulous beast that does not seem to have been conceived out of human fears. In even the earliest references he is fierce yet good, selfless yet solitary, but always mysteriously beautiful. He could be captured only by unfair means, and his single horn was said to neutralize poison."

The M101 (also nicknamed the Pinwheel Galaxy) lies in the northern circumpolar constellation, Ursa Major (The Great Bear), at a distance of 25 million light-years from Earth. M101 is estimated to contain at least one trillion stars. Approximately 100 billion of these stars could be like our Sun in terms of temperature and lifetime.

She raised her head listening by that silent pool
For the sounds of other unicorns on this earth.
Thoughtless mankind had polluted their virgin woods.
Evil men had murdered them for their golden horn.
Was she the last representative of her line?
Sadly, hopelessly, wandered that lonely unicorn.
Would the unicorn finally become extinct?
Yet another species destroyed by human greed?
She explored throughout the earth looking for her mate.

Unicorns like and need privacy, open spaces, and clean environment for survival. Unicorns walk in a graceful and delicate manner, carefully placing each foot down in such a way as to avoid trampling on flowers, small insects, or other animals. They will sometimes make large detours in order to avoid confrontations with other more belligerent creatures. When in a hurry they trot, and when frightened they gallop. Besides trotting, they are also able to make unusually long jumps when running. These may cover as much as twenty feet and enable them to cross small rivers or roads without getting wet or leaving footprints.

Unicorns of the forest and meadows dine on certain berries, blossoms, buds, bark, farm crops, honey, and sap. Clean washed river stones formed an important part of their diet. Those living in areas where there were caverns were repeatedly seen or heard gnawing on stalactites and stalagmites. Unicorns like most ungulates are quite addicted to certain minerals.

The supernova remnant (SNR), known as “E0102″ for short, is the greenish-blue shell of debris just below the center of the Hubble image. A massive star has exploded as a supernova, and begun to dissipate its interior into a spectacular display of colorful filaments. Determined to be only about 2,000 years old, E0102 is relatively young on astronomical scales and is just beginning its interactions with the nearby interstellar medium.
