My name is Jan and I live in a small town in Massachusetts where I have a two bedroom in-law in the house belonging to my daughter and son-in-law. I have a wonderful and much loved grandson who joined our family via adoption when he was 2-1/2 years old. I have a deep abiding love of animals and in total this household currently has two dogs and seven cats that share our lives. I retired a while ago and am still fighting boredom because now I have too many free hours in a day. I never thought I would say that! I am thoroughly addicted to reading books and tend to visit the library weekly as well as ordering books on-line from libraries throughout the Commonwealth. Reading is a God-send since I have difficulty sleeping and as long as I have a good book to read (or a crossword puzzle to work), I don't mind being wide awake in the middle of the night. I've had what I consider to be three separate careers - 1. Human Resources management; 2. Realtor; and 3. Animal Care and Adoption Counselor at the local SPCA. H.R. was what I consider to be my "real" career path. Realtor was what I did to see if I would enjoy it. I didn't since being a Realtor, you have little to no time to call your own. And Animal Care and Adoption Counselor? Well, the good side was adopting out animals to good homes; the bad side included taking in surrendered animals and worst of all, having to euthanize animals. That aspect of the job was what finally wore me down and made me decide to retire. I now volunteer at that SPCA so I have not by any means severed my ties there.
