Hello Robert, Cool & beautiful image you sent. Great to hear from you. The bears in Bella Coola, my understanding, do not kill as many people there as the Bella Coola River. Because I am from north Louisiana, 70 miles east of Shreveport in the country, I see snakes at times, but cottom mouth snakes for the most part do not get me upset, but never saw a bear until in Bella Coola 2008 & they were (two) was hundreds of yards off across the river. A young grizzly came close to the cabin when my friend Barry Andy & Barney were working on the cabin, but he cranked the chainsaw & it took off. Then last time I was at cabin in 2009, one was across the river several nights feeding on the fruit trees, & I was parked there, but I never knew it until next day, both times, when scan & tracks were everywhere. I got bored alone at the cabin, so I'd like to find a few to share it with. Also three or four people bear tend to avoid. If you look on the net "List of Fatal Bear Attacks in North America it reveals about three each year 2000 -2009 in all north America. Blacks seem to kill about as many. I honestly believe my 3K mile drive there is much more dangerous. Then I look on the net at the following info-
    BEARS KILLED BY YEAR- 2010 = 3 so far, 2009 = 2, 2008 = 3, 2007 = 4, 2006 = 2, 2005 = 6 Bad year, 2004 = 0, 2003 = 2, 2002 = 3, 2001 = 2, 2000 = 3

USA DEATHS BY BICYCLE FOR YEAR 1999 750 DIED & 51,000 INJURIES (Years used are just what I found)
USA DEATHS BY LIGHTNING FOR YEAR 2007 43 DIED
    USA DEATHS BY "MOTORCYCLES" FOR 2008 = 5,357 (14+ KILLED EACH DAY) 2007 = 4,854, 2006 = 4,510, 2006 = 4253, 2004 = 4008, and Thank God LESS THAN 5,000 FOR 2009.
USA DEATHS BY SNAKE BITE 5 TO 10 PER YEAR
USA DEATHS BY VEHICLE HITTING DEER FOR YEAR 2007 = 150 & APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 MILLION DEER HET EACH YEAR.
USA DEATHS KILLED DEER HUNTING FOR YEAR 2002 = 89 DEATHS
USA DEATHS BY FOODBORNE DISEASES (KNOWN PATHOGENS) EACH YEAR ABOUT 5,000 DEATHS.
USA DEATHS BY DROWING FOR YEAR 2004 WAS 3,308 OR ABOUT NINE EACH DAY.
USA DEATHS FROM ATV ACCIDENTS FOR YEAR 2002 WERE 357 KILLED.
USA DEATHS IN MOTOR VEHICLES FOR YEAR 2009 = 33,808 about 92 per day.
    USA DEATHS FROM PIT BULLS ARE 20 - 25 PER YEAR. Death from all dogs for 2007 = 33, 2008 = 23, 2009 = 30
Sharks kill about 100 per year.
Jellyfish kill about 100 per year.
    Hippopotamus kill 150 per year.
    Elephants kill 500 per year.
But I can't allow anyone to go to my land without warning anything could happen. I think I saw on YouTube.com, amoung other bear videos in Bella Coola, this Japanese looking tourist who was on a river (maybe not Bella Coola River) taken pictures of these mother bear & cubs and he was backing up more and more as the bear was walking his way on the river. I wouldn't have hung around as long as he was, nor as close, but lots of people get away with doing it I guess. I believe, right or wrong, the less bears fear people, and not running off as soon as they see people, the more dangerous they may be. I also believe many people survived a bear attack "only" because the bear decided they would live another day. I also believe, for the more part, because up river where it is shallower, much easier for the bears to cartch fish, they are more often up river from where my cabin is, but still, I'd guess, if you're at the cabin long enough, one will come by, but you may never see it when it does. The bear may never walk in front of the cabin. There was a trial a short ways behind the cabin I dicovered only days after being there. I'd love to share it with folks whether I am there or not because my care-takers there would like to serve people wanting to fish there. I told them it's theirs to do that as they asked me if they could when I was there the first & last time August 2009. Still I have read many bears books, and in most cases, people attacked and survived had terrible nightmairs which if it happened to me, I many never go back. I do everything I can to avoid any problems and know a fed bear is not only a dead bear, it can cause others problems before it dies. I believe most people in Bella Coola Valley are bear wise & do not do stupid things like feed the bears. Still there are zillions of fruit trees there, everywhere, so the bears make lots of visits. The Bella Coola Valley is known for growing nice crops just like parts of Alaska are. Keep it all in mind just in case you or others want to consider going to the cabin. Still if you never ever went to my cabin, I'd strongly recomend the Bella Coola Valley just the same.
