Have a wonderful trip to the Yucatan, I did all you are doing BEFORE Cancun became such a resort area, rented a jeep with a bunch of college friends in 1976 and did the Isla Mujeres bit (Tortuga Beach with the giant turtles, don't miss it!) Tulum, Merida and Chicanizca .... hope it has not changed too much, and gotten too "Turista"...There was a dirt cheap restauraunt in Cancun City called "Chocos y Terre"... wonderful, bountiful servings of food! Might still be there!!! Our jeep broke down, unfortunately, somewhere in the middle of nowhere on the way to Tulum but that only added to the adventure... oh to be young again... the snorkeling is great at Isla...
