- More about me
-
Although I was exempt from the Draft, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in the summer of 1966, and spent 13 months (May 67 to June 68) in South-East Asia. On June 29 1968, my father was killed in a motorcycle accident on Ritchie Highway, and I was brought home from overseas. I was then stationed at Headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington VA. I applied for, and was granted, an “early out” from USMC to return to University of Maryland, College Park in September 1968. I earned by BA in Philosophy in 1970, my MA in Philosophy in 1974, and my Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1979. I taught both Philosophy and Religious Studies for 25 years at colleges and universities in Maryland, the District of Columbia, Georgia, and Ohio. Since 2001, I have been working at Verizon Wireless, currently as a Data Technician. I have been divorced twice.
In June 2004, I married my best friend so that I could use my FMLA benefit to keep my job and still have the time off to take care of her as she recovered from Scoliosis surgery. But after she did recover, we discovered that the surgery did not resolve some of her symptoms. She was then examined by neurologists at the Cleveland Clinic and diagnosed as having “Motor Neuron Disease, with secondary Parkinsonism”. (Motor Neuron Disease is a family of degenerative nerve disorder of which the most famous is ALS.) Her disease, although degenerative, has been progressing very slowly, so that she can still work part time. And it seems I have once again a meaning in life: helping and caring for her.
