Born and raised on the southwest side of Chicago, Steve Mayfield is a product of the Chicago parochial and public school systems. After spending a large portion of his life in various management roles in large corporations and going through two downsizings, Steve started over as a small business owner purchasing a tutoring franchise. In addition, with his wife, Rita, Steve founded a soft skill training and consulting company called Gentle Ears, Inc. Using knowledge gained from his extensive managerial and employee interaction experience, Steve writes management pieces for the Business Ledger (Naperville, IL) and EzineArticles. A 1994 founding member of The Houndz, a sixties and original music rock band based in the Chicago area, Steve plays guitar, sings and writes songs. Along with his fellow Houndz, Steve has produced four cds- 2nd Adulthood, Work Songs, These Guys (the 2005 Chicago White Sox) and Afterlife Crisis. In 2002, Steve wrote and with Ken White (drummer for the Houndz) demoed the trilogy of songs- Shooting Stars and Wishes, The Far Side and Ocean of Storms, that became the foundation for Afterlife Crisis. The music identified so closely with the book, Steve realized he couldn't separate the two. So despite some opposition, he decided to package the music and the book together to provide a unique, rich experience for his readers and listeners. First titled The Warmth Rating, the words and music that became Afterlife Crisis sprung from Steve's own life experiences. Future music novels and non-fiction works are in process. Steve and his wife, Rita, reside in Des Plaines, IL. and New Buffalo, MI.

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge When embarking on a journey, never ask for directions from someone who has never left shore One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time It might be love that rules the heart but dreams rule the soul
