• • Revising my play "COURTING MAE WEST," I thought of the manuscript as a club sandwich of cultural staples. For starters, I had built the menu around MAE WEST [1893 — 1980], a woman impatient with assigned gender roles, hungry for meanings she has not yet articulated in a successful stage persona — — an actress who was a thundercloud of action becalmed by unemployment 1923—25, and a natural agent of chaos straight out of a Puritan's raw demonology. • • I added condiments, i.e., a vengeful City Hall, prepared to kill a "dirt play" quick as a trapper does in a baby seal. • • Then I added narrative spice — — accompaniments . . . • • Read more — — view link :-D ~ ~ come up and see Mae ~ ~
