ride a freight train
ride a freight train I have been on so many trains in my life, and I loved them all. The old, the shiny new, the super fast and the crawlers. Someday I hope to ride a freight train if even on a few feet of track. When I was a child I fantasized about hopping a freight as my father had done during the depression. He rode the rails looking for work while my mother stayed in a small shack on a farm with my siblings and me. For him it was not an adventure, but a necessity. For me, it would be a great adventure. Also I would like to ride an icebreaker. I have seen the Northern Lights but would like to see the Southern Lights.

looking back
When I think about my childhood, I feel like I am the luckiest person ever born. Even though I was born during the depression, my parents made my life and the life of my 6 siblings happy. I was raised in Washington, DC and could go to all the museums and monuments at any time. The cherry blossom time was especially memorable in DC. On Easter Monday children were invited to the White House lawn to "roll eggs." We rode streetcars to the White House with our Easter baskets. President Roosevelt and Eleanor would come out onto the balcony and greet us. I am ashamed now that I was more interested in rolling the eggs than to get excited over the president waving to us.
