  • See my local church become a model for social justice activity 2010 - Needham

I've been in the church since 1972 and have worked along the way to help the church focus on, and become engaged in, social justice issues. A key part of that has been leading the church to have an active partnership with a village in Guatemala.

  • Work to close the School of the Americas 2010 - Columbus, Georgia

A strong social movement is working to close the school of the Americas. I will be a part of that, and hope we are successful at least by 2010

  • 50th Wedding Anniversary August 16, 2008

With the help of our three children, we threw a big party with140 people in a hired hall. Catered the meal and a nine-piece marimba band. Kay and I gave a dialogue in which we talked about our fifty years. A great time!

  • Six Weeks in China: Journey of Discovery March 17, 2008

Kay and I took a six-week trip to China, with the idea of getting to know this important land that is becoming so important in the world and to our country. We had no prior reservations from home, except our initial hotel in Shanghai, so we would have somewhere to go from the airport. It was a fabulous trip, where we met friendly and helpful people and saw both city and scenic rural areas. We also became aware of the authoritarian nature of the government, though we didn't have any direct encounters with it. Our impression was that if people didn't raise their political profile with criticisms of the government, they could go about their lives without the state hassleing them. This trip was part of our 50th anniversary celebration of our wedding. • Groin operation recovery June 28, 2007 - Boston, MA

As I write this the date is today, and there is a category on the life map for "today," so have to see if it actually goes there, and what happens when this today isn't the today when tomorrow rolls around. This was one of those hard-to-talk-about operations, but nonetheless is important to get done for one's quality of life. In any case, it wasn't so serious, though painful, and I'm on the recovery side of it. As we get older we have these tune-up steps that need to happen. And who would trade away the chance to get older--as long as we are reasonably sound in mind, emotions, spirit and body. So tune we do.

  • Daughter Heidi's thyroid operation April 29, 2007 - Boston, MA

Heidi had suffered from hyperthyroidism for some time and it was dragging her down. She was concerned about surgery, however, because of other health factors she has, so put off having the operation as long as she could. But she finally decided she had to go through with it, and is now very glad she did. She feels much better and is back to her old self, pretty much.

  • Trip to St. John March 29, 2007 - Cruz Bay, St. John

The day after the 20th celebration concluded, Kay and I left for a decompression experience at our favorite island of St. John. We left the events and cares of life on land behind, and spent as much of the week as possible underwater, with our snorkeling gear on, admiring and being happy in that beautiful world. At the end of each of our snorkeling days we were also exhausted, but it was a physical tiredness, that left us feeling good. About all we had energy for at the end of the day was our gin rummy tourney. Kay won our best two of three game evenings more times than I did. Can't remember the score, exactly.

  • Twentieth Anniversary of the church Guatemala Project March 21, 2007 - Needham, MA

After two years of planning, the big week-long set of events to mark the 20th anniversary of our Guatemala Project got underway, when the delegates from the village arrived on Wednesday, the 21st. We did many events with the delegates in the days before and after the "official" celebration on the next weekend, the 23rd-25th. On Friday evening we had a forum on the history of the village and our role in that history. Delegates from the village discussed different aspects of the history. I covered the history of our project. Saturday was a marathon of a plenary session following a breakfast, then 8 different workshops. The lunch session included a presentation by a good friend of our project of medical work he carries on in a very conflictual area of Colombia. We were all moved by that presentation. Saturday afternoon featured a story-telling session, when people could call up their favorite memories of their participation in the project. That evening we had a big party when 260 people came to join in the celebration. A live marimba band added a lot to the sense of joy in the room. Delegates led in a fun game that involved the whole crowd. Dancing was good fun. Then Sunday we had a report-back of what had been discussed in each of the workshops from the day before. The church service featured the project. Then at lunch we had a "where do we go from here" session, along with an evaluation of the weekend. That evening we had a potluck at the pastor's house. More events for the delegates on Monday and Tuesday, and they then flew back to Guatemala and their homes on Wednesday. At the end of that week those of us involved in the planning ad carrying-out of the events were exhausted, but delighted, as well. The celebrateion had exceeded all of our expectations for it.
