privately educated 2010 - Wisconsin
I don't remember a time when I didn't know how to read, and I read anything that looks interesting, though my favorite genres are mysteries and science fiction/fantasy/classic horror (i.e., no splatter need apply).

foreclosure August 25, 2009
lost my home due to idjits who thought my bro-in-law's brain injury was temporary and he'd be going back to work soon...

Walter December 20, 2007 -
Today I met a retired Marine named Walter while I was waiting for my brother-in-law to finish his therapy appointment at our local hospital. Walter served on the Pacific Front in WWII; he was on Iwo Jima, among other places, and he was one of the men who made it a little safer for his buddies to raise the flag on Mount Suribachi! Walter is very gentlemanly, and popular with the hospital staff, many of whom wished him a Merry Christmas by name as we chatted. I am glad to have met this living link to important history and fine human being--even if we never encounter each other again, I think of him as a friend!

my most treasured employment 2007 - Community Clothes Closet, Menasha, WI
This is where I do the most good in the world. We give free clothing to low-income families and individuals, and one of my jobs here is to get us in-kind donations from clothing manufacturers and distributors all over the U.S. My boss-lady treasures me--and since a good many of our volunteers are at least 10 years older than I am (and a few will never see 90 again!!) this is also about the only place left in which I'm still thought of as "the kid"! (lol)

memories of 9/11 September 11, 2001 - Neenah, WI
I got the news from the "Today" show when I woke up--I started with coverage of the 1st plane, and saw the 2nd hit live... The thing that has stayed with me ever since was one woman who came into the studio to ask for information about her missing husband: she had a 3-year-old at home and was pregs with twins--and her husband worked for Cantor Fitzgerald. I never caught her name, but I still think about her and wonder how she and her kids are doing.

ongoing accomplishment 2000 - Community Clothes Closet
One of my jobs at the CCC is sending out letters to seek in-kind donations from clothing manufacturers in the U.S. We've gotten wonderful responses from all sizes of company--everything from giant multinationals to companies that consist of two women, a sewing machine, and some basement space they weren't using! I am very proud of my efforts!

Write a book 1999 - Wisconsin
Hmmmm... Well, it's a science fiction novel, but it's also sort of a war story, sort of a love story, and sort of a ghost story...

Mom gets her reward for 45 years as a loyal smoker October 17, 1997 - Adams WI
Lung cancer that metastatized to her spinal column and brain--and right to the very end, she denied that her 3-pack-a-day habit could possibly have had anything to do with it...
-
brat fry May 5, 1996 - Cub Foods, Appleton WI
A fundraiser for the USS Valiant's various charities. This was the first time we did one--and almost the LAST, as Mother Nature decided a late-season snowstorm was in order. We cleared nearly a hundred dollars (mostly sympathy purchases from people who saw us all shivering around the barbecue).

adoption by Blackie J Cat March 15, 1996 - Winneconne, WI
My sister had gotten a litter of 4 orphaned kittens to bottle-raise, and I volunteered to help with the feedings. One kitten, the darkest of the 4, basically took one look at me, sank all of his kitten claws into my heart, and hasn't let go since. He thinks I'm his mama, since he was too young to remember his cat-mama, and I just haven't had the heart to disillusion him. (And yes, he's an ex-tom, so we don't have to worry about him leaving any orphans behind when his time comes...)

my 1st Renfaire June 26, 1994 - Bristol WI
A bit of time-travelling to the medieval era! I managed to blend in without too many anachronisms, and even used my knowledge of Shakespearean English to find appropriate terms to explain Beavis & Butthead to an Elizabethan tailor!

the (in)famous Ferengi shortcut June 12, 1994 - en route to Enterprise Lake WI
This has to rank as a major fiasco in the annals of The Great American Road Trip! The Ferengi (Lou LaRue) put us on a road that turned into a mud logging road, getting the lead vehicle and the boat it was towing into a major jam-up that took the entire crew to untangle; one of the boats broke down when we got to the lake; the town attached to the lake turned out to be smaller than a tribble's eyelash; and, oh yes, there was a bit of confusion thanks to Q (or the county road named for him...)
