Retirement June 1, 2008 - Tennessee

31 years of teaching comes to an end and a new stage of my life begins.

Teaching Career August 18, 1977

I begin my teaching career. I am assigned a 3rd grade class. Enrollment is up but classroom space is scarce. My classroom is a portable classroom newly partitioned to make 2 classrooms. Next door is a kindergarten classroom. I am teaching my 33 third graders in my 1/3 of the portable. I am so thrilled to have a job and so overjoyed to do have a chance to do what I love doing, working with children, that it fails to register with me how poor my working conditions are. I'm in 7th heaven and have a great first year.

Begin Teaching August 1977 - Tennessee

I begin my career as a teacher. I am teaching 3rd grade. Enrollment is high but classroom space is low. I begin in a partitioned portable classroom. Next door is a kindergarten classroom. I have 33 third graders in 1/3 of a classroom space. I'm so glad to have a job and am so green I don't even realize how bad the working conditions are. I'm in 7th heaven with my students and consider it a great first year.

College Graduation May 28, 1976 - Middle Tennessee State University

I completed my BS in Elementary Education. This has also been a year for all of us to celebrate the United State's Bicentennial.

High School Graduation May 27, 1972

Begin School August 15, 1960

Off to school. Alice and Jerry (and their dog Jip) and Mrs. Durham will teach me to read.

I Am Born January 30, 1954

I am born - the 4th daughter in a family that will grow to be 5 daughters. Unknown to me John Travolta and Oprah Winfrey are also born this year. Jan. 30th is also the birth date of FDR one of my favorite US presidents.
