PT Wood
It's been quite a while since I mentioned this, but I think it needs to be mentioned again! If you ever work with pressure treated wood, please, please wear a respirator! That stuff has all kinds of carcinogenics in it. I firmly believe that is how I got my cancer. I've built two decks and all my outdoor furniture with that stuff, and never used protection! Sure, they put a warning on it! A little 1/2 by 1 tag stapled to the end, like anybody is going to notice it, other than to pop it off and throw it away!
Don't ever bring that stuff into the house unless it's going to be sealed and painted!

Tools, tools, tools!
Seems everytime I go to Georgetown to work I come home with a new tool! Craigslist is full of them and I got an almost new router and table and about 30-40 bits yesterday on the way up and I'm going Saturday with my teacher to buy a table saw...omg, I can't believe my workshop is coming together! Somehow in the rain (keep it up, we're not complaining, but timing is everything) I've got to move all the junk that has accumulated in my garage out to the storage room and get it ready for the arrival of the new 40x50" table saw...that's a little intimidating by itself, haha, router and table, work stand, work bench and make someplace to put my compound miter saw...all this and I've spent about $250 on all of it...not bad!
Taking woodworking lessons from a friend!

And this is my first 'real' project. I've build a couple of little bluebird houses and now I'm moving on to bigger things...I think I'll keep up with the bird houses since you can never have enough, but I'm loving these little boxes. This one has a curly maple top and walnut base. Our last lesson included a trip to Alamo Hardwoods...omg! Got mahogany for the base and some birdseye maple for more projects...can't wait to get started.
Stuff I've done recently
I'm vastly reduced in my tool access in the past few months and as a result most of the stuff I'm doing these days turns out round.
I picked up some cherry burl cutoffs, a box of very miscellaneous stuff:

Some of that stuff isn't usable at all, but if you get a chunk that can be used as one end of a pen it can turn out right pretty. This was just a rough turn and finish to get an idea what it looks like:

For some reason our local Woodcraft store has a bunch of Lignum on sale for $0.99 each. Here's a pen I made out of that:

I did make a bunch of pens for Christmas gifts, a few for family, sold several more, made a couple of kaleidoscopes (no pictures, unfortunately) and I'm working on a set of lamp pulls from maple to match the floor for someone at work:

Not quite identical, but you can at least tell they're related. First cousins, maybe.
I'll put up another post a bit later talking about my 'workshop' - I call it uShop :)

Refinishing wood
Hello to all!
I purchased a 1907 home. One (of many) projects to be addressed is the woodwork. All is wood, including beautiful detailing. I need to decide whether I want to add yet another layer of paint - there's probably 10 now - and have a brush and a dab of paint readily available as the current chipping is horrible or to refinish the wood. The latter would be absolutely beautiful, yet seems so overwhelming ... partially because I've tested a few types of stripper and they aren't working effectively.
Suggestions?
Glenda
