Volumetrics-effective yet never heard of

Combined with the menu planning chart some of you requested from me - each meal must contain 3 food items = a fat/carb, protein and burner.

I think I give this additional information a thumbs up as far as helping with "portion" if still hungry and which items may work better in your diet from those listed in that chart. In the long run, I still believe it is a good habbit to eat recommended servings. Portions can be downsized as we adapt to lower weights.

Saw this in Newsweek March 19, 2007 issue under Nutrition. "Volumetrics my be the most popular diet you've never heard of."
Volumetrics is a program developed by Barbara Rolls, a professor of nutritional sciences at the Pennsylvania State University. A book, by the same title, shows how weight can be managed by choosing foods that the program calls "low in energy density (ED)" foods that make you feel satiated, or full, but that are also low in calories. These low "ED" foods all have high water content - the secret ingredient. "But drinking water alone won't help you fill up - just quench your thirst."

It goes on to say - this is not a vegan diet - "sound nutrition and weight management is all about choices".

"Rule of thumb: Eat all you want of foods that wind up with an ED rating of below 1 - most fruits and veggies. Foods with ED ratings of 1 to 2, like pasta and low-fat, skinless meats are also good. Foods with higher-ED ratings, like ice cream and fries, should be limited, but not abandoned - especially if you enjoy them".

How to calculate the "ED": Look at ingredient label for calories and grams per serving. Divide the calories by the grams for one serving to equal that foods "ED". Example given one serving is 1 tablespoon of peanut butter: 190 calories and 32 grams. 190/32 = 5.9

Hope this information is helpful!

New member - like to learn about

Hi, I'm Lynette. I enjoy learning about the importance of nutrition and how it impacts the various functions of the body. I have accumulated lots of reference materials, but am always looking for more.

It saddens me to see so many people taking prescriptions for symptoms, depressed, overweight, etc, when adjustments in nutrition could very well cure the cause.

Anyway, I look forward to learning and sharing with you all!

Have a great day!
