What's changed?

Back in the day, being anti-government was considered the height of liberalism. Now, it's considered being a staunch conservative. What's changed? My views haven't changed all that much since the sixties, I still think the government needs to be much less, not more and more like they keep trying to be. In fact, I see little need for the Federal government at all, certainly not all of the departments and Bureaucracies they have. The DEA could go away, no one would care. Everyone would cheer if the IRS was done away with. This country was strongest before there was any income tax, so there's no proof it's necessary. In fact, why is it necessary for the government to take money from the citizens at all? All they really should do could be paid for with proper import duties and tarriffs, and that would create more jobs here because then manufacturing could stay here.
We certainly didn't need Fannie Mae and Freddi Mac. In fact, they were private enterprises backed by the government... why? The feds don't need to be bailing out banks and huge corporations, back in the day, if a company failed, it failed, oh well, too bad. Bailing out banks? That's just crazy, why give money to someone that's proven they can't handle it ... duh.. that goes back to doing away with taxes. Fact is, 80 percent of what is spent by the government is stolen, misused, or simply wasted. They don't even get good value for the twenty percent that's actually spent on necessary things. Therefore, I think we can reduce the government by at least 80 percent, along with what they spend.

The few good programs they have, like Social Security, are now so messed up it's ridiculous. Allowing that money to go into the general fund was a huge blunder, but they do what they want, no matter what the people think. Fact is, 89.7 percent of what's spent on Social Security is for administration, not benefits. Those at the top that do the least make the most, their salaries rival what the president gets, and they're not elected nor do they have to account to anyone else, presidents come and go, yet they stay.

So, anyway, how is being against an intrusive government that costs way too much for what we get conservative? Wanting to conserve what we have, does that make me conservative? "Liberals" want to save this, that, and the other thing, but want the government, and every taxpayer, to foot the bill for their big ideas. Some things don't need to be saved from extinction, it's actually cruel not to let them go the way of the dodo bird. Making wild animals live like we do... well that's cruel. They aren't meant to live in zoos or in confined spaces.
So called liberals are liberal all right, with other people's money. Now they think they can tell us what we can and can't eat. Whatever happened to "mind your own business?"

Women's Rights???

The Church/ State thread in NHB got me thinking. Is "access" to birth control a right or an entitlement? What about financial access to sterilization and abortion? Are these women's rights issues or things that should be there but if we want them, we pay for them.

Can someone explain?

Companies Altering Records To Prevent Unemployment

Seems there are some very strong rumors out there there that some companies are illegally altering company records in order to prevent employees they have let go from receiving unemployment benefits. Why you will ask? To save money on their tax contributions to the unemployment fund in their state. If they let the employee go for business reasons like they got cut back on hours, or they cut back on number of employees in a department, they might alter the records to show they fired the employee for "cause", for example high absenteeism, or tardiness, thereby saving them money in the long run in taxes. It is very easy for them to go into the computerized records and change a day at work to a day of absenteeism.

"A company can do very little to reduce its contributions to the state's unemployment fund except to manage its unemployment claims. It's possible to reduce the amount of claims if it terminates employees for offenses rather than laying them off for business reasons. Detailed records of the offenses, corrective taken and termination are necessary. Also, each time an employee who was fired attempts to collect benefits, the company should answer the state's inquiry by protesting the claim and getting it denied."

We need some whistle blowers, but in this economy, everyone is afraid of losing their job and the companies know that. Report any company that is illegally altering their employee records, and keep as much proof for yourself as possible.

Send this on so people know what is happening. Denying people unemployment is a really rotten thing to do.

Chutzpah

Chutzpah is a Yiddish word meaning gall, brazen nerve, effrontery, sheer guts plus arrogance; it’s Yiddish and, as Leo Rosten writes, no other word, and no other language, can do it justice.

promise last thing on privacy

I was listening to a panel of privacy and the internet It seemed good timing as Facebook has just worked out an agreement with the FTC about information sharing has new privacy settings. It has been estimated that Facebook has earned $8.2 Billion dollars in data aggregation for sales. I believe one condition of the agreement is facebook will send a message to members what info is being revealed. And they have new security settings
A service of personnel investigators have gone high tech. Some companies have asked for passwords from applicants. These investigators collect as much data as possible if blocked they review old sites and make a profile similar to a credit worthiness. Employee worthiness score. They stay within the law not discriminating or revealing info about sexual orientation, health diagnoses but might mention that one visits the National stroke association. Or if you post pictures they might be attached to the report. Should users of social networks just use a universal precaution approach or is there a new definition of privacy today. In 2010 a Democratic candidate for Congress in Virginia, Krystal Ball during the campaign had pictures of her taken back in college wearing a Santa outfit and a red leotard. (No link to photo find it yourself) She blamed her opponent who became indignant stating innocence then getting on T.V. with the photo saying bloggers who he has 'no control over" take it down.

Should There Be Societal Control of Sugar

Just read this article about a researcher that believes that society should control sugar like we do alcohol and tobacco. I personally don't see sugar as so dangerous that it needs this kind of control. Too Intrusive? What do YOU think? view link
