Writing a Few Words for an Upcoming Book

I believe that "no matter what, we always have something to look forward to."

Along those lines, a close friend & colleague was asked by his alma mater to write a book based on his experiences and positive forward thinking.

The book has 11 chapters where lay people provide input. After each chapter are related mini-chapters written by professionals such as career coaches, encore/transition coaches, wellness experts & self-help gurus. A portion of the revenue will be going to the school and additional proceeds will be going to people that provide input if they are interested.

The book will have good exposure since it will be sold/distributed throughout academia as well as other outlets.

If you are interested in participating as a ‘lay person contributor’ or ‘professional author of a mini chapter,’ please let me know and I can send a NDA (non-disclosure agreement). The content definitely relates to living a full life - one where optimism and confidence in the future makes every day great.

Thank you,
Michele

Update

I have not taken the time to update all you good folks and let be the first to say with the unending ongoing treatment for Irene that involves a trip of some forty miles each and every day to and then back (80 miles} three to almost five hour treatments leaves me in a tired almost exhausting day.
I think that I brought you up to date on the Mesa bug (superbug) she picked up in the Hospital two weeks after coming home---wellll !!!!!! guess what? another spell of nine days back in Boston for the battle on MESA. She has lost all the plastic surgery patch, a huge 6X7 inch area over this wound. This resulted in a massive deep wound almost to the bone that had to be wet packed by nurses each and every day. After bouts with massive pain and emergency room visit with chest pain-- we are now doing daily run to the closest hospital that has a Hyperbolic Oxygen Chamber that she can put her whole body into for day treatments of at least 3 hours. She has a vacuum pump to drain this whole area 24 hours a day.
This is our routine each day with little time for nothing else.

Hyperbolic Oxygen Chamber is a chamber that deep sea divers use, in Irene`s case it promotes Healing at two atmospheres pressure.
Needless to say this already over thirty treatments and still going----If this works it will save her leg so far a slow progress is showing and healing is working from the inside out the way the Doctors want the healing to go.

Making My Mark in the World

Since I read the other "Fullest Life" messages, I am afraid my story will seem selfish. After many years of living for others, rescuing stray cats and dogs and helping in the communities I lived in, I thought about my life in another way. Once my chilren were grown I decided I wanted to be remembered for more than my pineapple upside down cake. Admitting to myself that I was too old to win an Olympic medal, not talented enough to win an Academy award, I thought I might do something to get in the Guinness Book of World Records. At first I couldn't think of anything I could do to be listed.
Then, about two o'clock one morning I jumped out of bed and called the Guinness people in London. I realized I could combine my love of train travel with a Guinness record. I offered to stay on the same train for a year if there would be a way to take showers. I was told that the best way to get into the book was to beat an existing record, preferrably the most difficult one.
After searching the Guinness book I found the one I wanted to try. There was a record of the most unduplicated miles traveled by train. I got the go-ahead from Guinness, but not a promise of being in the book, even if I broke the record.
I got more adventure than I had bargained for. Although some of my travel was easy and without mishap, I was robbed in Bucharest, beaten in Berlin, lost many times, mistaken for a beggar, a prostitute, and other unsavory characters. Many strangers helped me along the way. I traveled through 33 countries and my mileage was enough to have circled the globe three and one fifth times(including the waters).
Each mile or kilometer had to be verified by a conductor or an assistant conductor. If I had to retrace my miles there would be no credit.
The hardest part of the journey was not traveling with low funds or as a woman alone, but as a vegetarian. There were times I thought of giving up, but there were those who had donated rail passes or cash, and I could not disappoint them.
I beat the record near the borders of Russia and Kazakstan. The hotel in Kazakstan had kept my passport and visa, so I was worried about traveling into Russia without my documents. With the help of others on the train I managed to appease the border guards and made it back to Moscow.
I waited several months before hearing from the Guinness people that my record had been accepted and that I would be listed in the 1998 Guinness book. When I saw my name for the first time in that book, I cried. Yes, I was proud of myself and my family was proud of me too. I wrote a book about my adventures by train. Now I feel I have made my mark in the world as an author and a world record holder. I was one moth away from 65 years old when I beat the record.

My life to the Fullest

I have always tried to live my life to the fullest. Now it is just more challenging!! I have Fibromyalgia and osteroarthritis so this slows me down but sure does not stop me. I raised 4 sons mostly by myself. My husband was a working traveling man so was away from home all week for 30 years of our life. We are enjoying 44 years of marriage this month(March) 20th. I made my list about 15 years ago and have accomplished most of it but I am also adding more as I see things I would like to do. Such as go Gold prospecting in Alaska. We have been diamond hunting in Arkansas and gem mining in North carolina. I loved white water rafting.I have free falling from a plane on my list but it is going to have to wait a while.Sense being diagnosed with fibro and OA I have gained some weight and I really want to land on my feet very graceful instead of like a tumble bug so some weight has to go.I have now joined Curves . 3 weeks into it.(and boy is it challenging) and I have started the South Beach diet. I've done the Atkins and lost weight but it is too restrictive for me. . So wish me luck. I hope to be jumping from a plane before I am 70. I have 9 beautiful grandchildren who I have so much fun with. They have been gem hunting with me. Our most favorite thing to do is a Tea Party. They recieve a written invitation and arrive on that day. They each go get dressed up(I have boxes of "dress-up" clothes)I am dressed to the "nines" The tables are set for "Tea and biscuits" The girls are escorted in and seated by the boys and tea is served. We have a long delicious 'Tea" I am always surprised at how the conversation goes. They are all very "prim and proper" WE have a wonderful time and they cannot wait until the next "Tea". I collect tea sets so this gives me a chance to use my favorites.I go to bed each night planning what I am going to do the next day.My husband has rebuilt a Scotty camper and we have done some camping the last 3 years and plan to do a lot more. It is hard to leave the grandchildren for very long.I had so much fun raising my boys. Now I am having as much fun with my grandkids. I have a "million" books to read but so far have not slowed down enough to get started on that. I also have 4 quilt tops made and ready to put together and I have started a personal diary for each of my sons, starting from the day I knew I was pregnant with them until they left home. This has been an interesting adventure. I find myself crying a lot when writing. But my life is full and very interesting.I never seem to have enough hours in the day,and I certainly want to live to be 100 at least.

TIME ( A Sestina)

How do we measure time?
The light flowing from the east, rising
and bathing the earth with a golden sun
daylight stretchs into minutes
leading inexorably into hours
becoming hazy fingers of twilight at days end.

Reaching toward a final end
that moment caught in the web of time.
The last drag of long weary hours
waiting for a loved ones return, rising
fever of anticipation for that glorious minute
faces shining like rays of the sun.

Slowly daylight appears with the sun
and counts the hours until days end.
Children become teenagers in minutes
rushing headlong into the future, time
changes babies into toddlers, rising
and growing with the passing of hours.

Creating change hour by hour
is the passage of the heavenly sun.
Men's faces appear with aging lines, rising
and breeding old men until the end.
Beauty queens, then mothers in time.
Grandmothers turning gray minute by minute

The death of a loved one, minute's
breath's thief, stealing hours.
Slowly the creeping hand of time
removes from our midst the loving sun
and clouds our minds to the inevitable end
of the goodness from which joy rises.

Love sings a song of rising
flowing to the sky every minute
unfinished until the very end
while waiting through lonely hours
for happiness as bright as the sun,
joyful at a lover's return in time.

How do we measure the endless hours
consuming minutes each day that rises?
Never captured is time, or the universe's sun.

Updates

As most of you know by now, my wife was involved in a head on crash by a drunk driver (his third offance--no insurance-no registration) back in September -08.

Among other injuries- the worst being a Hematoma (internal Blood Blister) on her left thigh which has been removed- but - the area is now involved with cancer.

We are back and forth to Damer Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
I have been asked to resend this as a few did not know about this.
Thank you all for your king remarks and prayers

Do you know about Festival of the Wise?

There is a really neat boomer get together on December 6-7 in Scottsdale AZ called Festival of the Wise - www.festivalofthewise.com - lots of great speakers (including me!), music, and classes too. If you are going to be in the area be sure to get tickets. If you use my promo code "roadtrip" you'll get a discount on the tickets. But they are inexpensive anyway...

If you come to hear me speak about road trips, come say hi!
