It's not just US...

13 days ago i posted a blog titled, "Isolationists can skip this, tho they need" (it the most.--at start of it). The theme was our common humanity. One of the responses, was from MrTsauce, a favorite acquaintance of mine here who is from Australia. If you visit that blog, you'll see the video response he posted by a band from his homeland: 'Blackfella, whitefella' by Warumpi Band. Of course i went to YouTube and looked at other videos with them. And so i discovered this one.

i'm ambivalent at best. i know that prejudice, imperialism, genocide are not a uniquely american traits. The Australian Aboriginal experience bears similarites to what was done to both the red and black peoples here, judging from the video and some other things i've read/seen. So great(heavy on the sarcasm there) we're not the only ones...wait...not great...would like there to be less not more of humankind's inhumanity to other humans.

Go check these guys out, and other Aussie music too, while you're there.

Our Celebration of Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa, a non religious , seven day celebration starts the day after Christmas. Saturday night my husband and I went to the first of the Kwanzaa celebrations in our city. My son deejayed (supremely I might add :-D ). It was hosted by some friends of his....young men who are certainly intent on following the seven principles. A young sister whose voice and style reminded me very much of Eryka Badu, sang while my son played the music she chose. I got her card to get back in contact with her...perhaps do an article on her.

Another young sister read Afro-centric poetry. Some of the younger ones read the principles and there were other recitations. They gave away free energy saving bulbs and one of the brothers running for city council made us aware that we can vote for three candidates in the next election. We actually arrived late due to a "rescue mission" my husband had to take care of. My son said we missed the Latin Band :-( and their explanations of the instruments and connection to African culture.

To top off the evening a wonderful and abundant meal was served. Perhaps 200 people were in attendance. It was a nice way to start the celebration of the week of Kwanzaa. My son played a very nice, happy song by Teddy Pendergast called Happy Kwanzaa. It was the first time I'd heard it.

Margaret Mead

i was looking for the wording of one of my favorite MM quotes this morning ("Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.") for a thread in another group, when i came across these two that i thought were relevant to our theme here.

"If we are to achieve a richer culture, rich in contrasting values, we must recognize the whole gamut of human potentialities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place."

"Instead of being presented with stereotypes by age, sex, color, class, or religion, children must have the opportunity to learn that within each range, some people are loathsome and some are delightful."

i am reminded why i enjoyed and admired her.
