What's the scoop on grinding nails?
Karen, tell me truly. If I pay the extra to grind their nails, will it be worth it? I don't take them as often as I used to, I'm trying to let the two young ones grow out. Abner likes to be short and I probably need to take him in for a shave and haircut. But I was really wondering about the nails. I notice they leave Teddy's long, I haven't noticed them being especially rough but they're really almost too long. They're dark so I wondered if they were afraid to clip too short.
Anyway, how short should they go and how long should I expect it to last?
I'm still going to PetSmart, but we've learned to only go during the day, my husband was not impressed with the late girl. Saw her leave a dog on the table to answer the phone! I had a fit when he told me that! But since I didn't see it, I didn't report it.
The Lord's watching out for my babies though, they've got a new groomer from another story who's especially fond of Lhasas! She did the best job on Teddy he's ever had, so I thought about you and asked that we get her all the time for all the dogs.
So, do I need to pay the extra for the grinding? I think it's like $5 or 10.00?

No...it's not a dog..BUT..
It's coming on to shedding season. This is the best video I have seen to demo the Furminator. If you have a shedding dog or any kind of cat...try this to keep hair out of your house.
Training your dog for grooming
This video is made by a young lady that worked in a grooming shop for awhile. She has some good suggestions on how to desensitize your dog to some of the things that need to be done. Now....never having seen how a groomer or bather works with a dog in private, some of the "good doggie" talk may seem silly but I can assure you this girl is perfectly sane...lol...She gets it...I used to say that if people could see the way we talk to t he dogs, they would think we are crazy...maybe so but they respond positively...
Happy 7th Birthday, Ashley

Today was Ashley's birthday. After forgetting it's her special day, I had to make it up to her. We went to PetsMart late this afternoon. We walked around and Ashley got to sniff out her birthday toy. Plus, everyone in the store knew it was her birthday. With the toy in my hand, we left and walked around outside of the mall and came home. Ashley has been playing with her new toy and is now sitting with it beside me at the computer. Her 2 brothers, Malcolm and Shamus, are waiting to to take the toy away from her. Fat chance that'll happen.
"It's Just a Dog"
"It's Just a DOG"
To anyone who says, "It's just a dog:"
You are the reason rescues exist, why thousands of dogs die everyday in shelters, homeless and unwanted.
You are the backyard breeder or puppy miller, who looks at a dog and sees dollar signs, who cares nothing for the inevitable decline in the dog's health after having litter upon litter of puppies, nor for the countless dogs who will now die in shelters because the puppies you breed have taken up their homes.
You are the supporter of these backyard breeders and puppy mills, willing to pay $500 or more for a puppy rather than $90 for a rescued dog, because having a pedigree to show off to friends is more important than saving the life of a true and loyal companion.
You are the one who trains dogs to fight, whether for sport or protection, thus abusing your dog and bringing the call for the extermination of an entire breed of perfectly wonderful dogs.
You are the one who thinks nothing of putting your dog to sleep because it doesn't go with the furniture, or it urinates on the carpet, while at the same time balking at the thought of spanking an unruly child.
You are the one who dumps your dog at the shelter when you move, because you're too lazy to find pet-friendly housing.
You are the one who keeps your dog tied up outside, only bothering to provide the occasional bowls of food and water and possibly a tree for shade, because after all, it is just a dog, right?
To the 90 year old woman in the nursing home, abandoned by her family, yearning for companionship, stroking the fur of a new friend with the words "Therapy Dog" on its side, it's not just a dog.
To the young child who has become literate by reading aloud to a dog in the classroom, it's not just a dog.
To the person with skin cancer who had it detected by a dog when the doctors couldn't, it's not just a dog.
To the blind man who now can see through his companion, it's not just a dog.
To anyone who has been in bed, sick with the flu, and has felt the warmth of that cold nose as he curls up between your legs to give you comfort, it's not just a dog.
To anyone who comes home from a hard day of work to be greeted by someone who's so happy to see you they can't stop wiggling, it's not just a dog.
To anyone who has cried at Old Yeller, because they know what it's like to lose their best friend, to know that their friend is suffering and though it may be hard, the best thing to do is to help them go peacefully, it's not just a dog.
When you say, "It's just a dog," you really mean, "Why should I care about it? Dogs aren't important. They're useless. They don't give anything to us, so why should I give them anything in return? Why do I have to care about their feelings? They don't matter in the grand scheme of things. It's just a dog."
To everyone who says, "It's just a dog," I just have this to say to you: You're just a human.

Happy Labor Day...

Happy Labor Day to everyone. Anyone have plans to do things with your furbabies? What is everyone going to do?
Me...I'm hanging out around the house or taking the 3 furkids with me to my sister and brother-in-law's house. On Sunday, the 3 of us, minus furbabies, are going to spend the day with my niece, her fiance and his family. We're going to a bbq! It'll be fun. Everyone's bringing a dish. I'm bringing baked beans...an easy dish for someone who is "cooking challenged". I don't cook much, if at all.
Grooming Days...
Okay...Monday and Tuesday are grooming days. Today, Ashley goes to the groomer for her monthly clip and bath. She always comes home looking so much slimmer and better. When her fur grows out, it just makes her look scruffy. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the boys go to be clipped and bathed. Malcolm really doesn't look all that bad. He just doesn't get scruffy, smelly or dirty. Shamus...here's another story. He gets downright dirty, smelly and in bad need of a clipping and bathing. I don't know why he attracts all of the dirt in the yard, but he does! LOL And, when he comes home, he looks the most improved and beautiful.
1000 Daschshunds Rescued
This story just came into the Pittsburgh Post Gazette website. Anyone in the Western PA, Southeastern Ohio or Northern W. VA interested in adopting or donating contact the Parkersburg Humane Society.
1,000 dogs seized from W.Va. kennel
Monday, August 25, 2008
The Associated Press
PARKERSBURG, W.Va. -- A Parkersburg-area breeder has surrendered approximately 1,000 dogs to humane society officials.
While there were no signs that the purebred dachshunds had been abused, officials say it would be impossible for any person to properly care for that many animals.
Carrie Roe, the board president for the Humane Society of Parkersburg, says many of the dogs had never been touched by a human.
Sheriff's deputies investigating possible dog-related pollution found the dogs Saturday while executing a search warrant on the property.
Wood County Prosecutor Ginny Conley says the owner hasn't been cited for animal neglect but has agreed to never operate a dog-breeding business again.
The pollution investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, the humane society says the rescue operation could cost up to $100,000.
