No Political Zone Reminder

For our newbies, and our old-bies as well, just a quick reminder to read the two Sticky posts with regards to our focus and posting guidelines.

This is a No Politics Zone - by that I mean no partisan politics. Please control your urge to share your thoughts about the current administration, the upcoming administration, the two major parties, and all politicos, with this group.

DO NOT POST UNCREDITED COPY & PASTE ARTICLES

It is against copyright laws to copy articles you find on the internet and then post them in this group or anywhere else - without attribution. It is against Eons TOU.

Again -- If you wish to copy and paste something, YOU MUST GIVE THE ATTRIBUTION. YOU MUST CITE THE AUTHOR AND WHERE YOU FOUND IT.

Any posts of this nature without attribution will be immediately deleted. Don't think for a minute that I can't google your article and find it.

And let me say this again - when you copy and post something without attribution, it is STEALING. It is PLAGARISM to post something as if you had written it yourself. Is this concept too difficult for people to grasp?

FURTHERMORE - (can you tell I'm irked?), do not post articles verbatim from the internet - or your email - without SUBSTANTIAL commentary from you. This is The Deeper THINKERS group, not The Shallow Copy and Paste Because I Am Too Damn Lazy to Come Up With My Own Thoughts On A Subject group.

GROUP PURPOSE AND POSTING GUIDELINES

This group dedicates itself primarily to considering the great eternal themes and universal ideas of a philosophical, metaphysical, and psychological nature. It is not a place to discuss politics - there are a number of excellent groups on Eons better suited for that. It is not a place to proselytize your religious affiliations. In discussions of life's philosophical and psychological issues, religion will naturally come into play, but this group is neither a camp meeting nor a pulpit.

Disparaging and denigrating remarks of any kind will be removed by the group administration without PM'ing the writer. We will not tolerate diatribes or name-calling. You may attack the idea, but not the poster.

While we will discuss most topics, this is NOT an anything-goes group. We will enforce the rules for civil discussion and maintain the peace so that all people feel comfortable in joining the discussion without fear of attack.

GUIDELINES FOR POSTING:
- We will not accept videos without your commenting on their content. All videos MUST be in First Reply in order to keep our busy First Page easily navigable.

- Loooong posts: please make a short teaser main post and put the bulk of your remarks in First Reply.

- We do not accept posts that contain only a View Link. Links should be in support of your point or observation, not the primary purpose of your post. If you feel compelled to post a link, please give a summary of its contents and your opinion or commentary on it.

- Please do not illustrate or decorate your posts or comments with graphics, or use a graphic as your reply. This group is for conversation, not for displaying your photobucket skills.

Exoplanet search becomes more than Science?

Soon, exoplanet exploration will be more than a scientific endeavor. Right now, we are about two steps away from the change. Step one will be confirmation that Gliese 581D has organic life. That could happen even as you read this. Step two will be confirmation that we have detected another civilization.

How soon could that step take place? It all depends on how enormous and advanced that other civilization is. If it consists of hundreds or even thousands of planets and it's able to move moons, detection may not be all that far away. In any case, we probably will have at least one address by 2030.

At that point, exoplanet search becomes a political and military problem rather than a scientific one. And, as such, it will provoke a political and military response. That's when, as I have said many times, all hell breaks loose.

Why Are All Babies Cute?

From another post , cute little yellow ducklings.
Started wondering why babies are cute.

That's ALL babies....regardless of the species.

I tried to think of an ugly baby anything.
Nothing comes to mind.

SO ... why are all babies cute?
And are humans the only species able to recognize "cute baby" in other species?

important scientific study.

Hard facts on a soft matter! ... The hypothesis presented herein says that abdominal hair is mainly responsible for the accumulation of navel lint, which, therefore, this is a typically male phenomenon. The abdominal hair collects fibers from cotton shirts and directs them into the navel where they are compacted to a felt-like matter. The most abundant individual mass of a piece of lint was found to be between 1.20 and 1.29 mg (n=503). However, due to several much larger pieces, the average mass was 1.82 mg in this three year study. When the abdominal hair is shaved, no more lint is collected. "

From the materials and methods: "The author first observed the accumulation of navel fluff in his early 20s. Despite thorough body hygiene including a daily morning shower, the navel filled with lint over the day. The author collected 503 pieces of navel fluff since approximately March 2005 with a total weight of almost 1 g... ...In order to investigate the role of the abdominal hair, the author also shaved his belly for this study."
Good science can be reproduced so the author of this study would like 5 males to volunteer to measure naval lint and
5 females to be a control group

The Flood

All those stories of the Great Flood, found in all cultures, where the water rose and covered the earth, and then eventually receded.

Where did all that water go?

Is it true that the earth is such a contained system that we still have every drop of water from the Great Deluge?

In Jingle Bells, what does "we got upsot" mean?

Is there other words that are a mystery or that you have discovered the meaning to?

Star Trek Stops Women...

...From Becoming Computer Scientists

The gender gap in computer science may have been widened by Star Trek, a new study suggests — but it could be bridged with a less geeky image.

New research published in the December Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests that the stereotype of computer scientists as unwashed nerds may be partially responsible for the dearth of women in the field, as shown by National Science Foundation statistics.

“What this research shows is that the image of computer science — this geeky, masculine image — can make women feel like they don’t belong,” says lead author Sapna Cheryan of the University of Washington.

"Unwashed nerds" LOL...
