teachers weekend

It's teacher's convention weekend here in NJ. I'm one of those lazy sloths who never quite make it down to Atlantic City but I do appreciate the two days off to collect my thoughts.

Took a group of my seniors to a local senior citizen home yesterday to serve breakfast and socialize. They were great but it's scary how close to my age the "senior" citizens are becoming. How long until people are doing that kind of thing for me? It may be uncharitable but I'm much happier on the giving end then the receiving end of these types of activities.

Oh well next field trip is to a college fair - should be much less scary except we're taking @ 80 students. I'll be counting all day!! lol - Debbie

Chicken pox

Yesterday, I have student send home for chicken pox. The nurse was telling me that they think that the kids need to have two vacciation for the chicken poxes. All I can say is thank goodness I have them. I guess that have been 2 students so far send home. Two in the sixth grade center, where I work, and one in the seventh and eighth grade building.

First 9 Weeks

The first 9 weeks has come and gone and I think this year will be very challenging in more ways than one. The whole 6th grade 3 teachers with 23 kiddos each and we are departmentalized (with the exception of maybe 7 to 8 out of each class), don't seem to want to learn, they are there to socilaize and the parents think their child does no wrong even when shown their child's work or lack of (which is mostly the case). I am amazed at the lack of parenting, they want to be a "friend" and teachers should just give them grades and not worry about behavior either. Can you tell I have just about had it all ready. I love teaching and the 7 or 8 in each class deserve better from the other students. Just venting, it was a tough week.

Hello Group....

I hope the end of October finds you all well....I should be able to visit here more often now that my VB teams have finished their season....that means I'm down to just JH Girls Basketball and teaching so I can "end" most evenings much earlier....

How has the H1N1 affected your districts? We've actually not seen any real effect, just the usual 6 or 7 students out for 3 - 5 days each....we are crossing our fingers that the worst is past, but we'll see....

OK, I'm going to call it a night and check back in the AM....later....TC

This I Believe

PBS has a radio show called this I believe where various people read their essays on what they believe. They've also published several books and a curriculum based on this program. I got the curriculum (spelling? this is one of those words I can never remember) and stole and rearranged some of the activities for my freshmen. I've posted one of the results in the pictures. Enjoy!1 - Debbie N.
