Time for a Mac?
I have been a desktop PC user for several years and I wish to buy a laptop with a large screen for my next machine. My 16 year old granddaughter is a confirmed Mac user and keeps telling me to update to a new Mac. What are the advantages and disadvantages of following her advice? Thanks.
The Ten Net Commandments

2.) Thou shalt not post thy e-mail address, phone number, address or social security number on the Internet, nor shalt thou post anyone else's.
3.) Thou shalt not forget to update thy Windows every second Tuesday.
4.) Thou shalt not connect to the Internet without installing an antivirus, nor shalt thou begin a scan without checking for updates.
5.) Thou shalt not connect to the Internet without installing a firewall.
6.) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's credit card number, nor his bank routing number, nor his social security number.
7.) Thou shalt not enter thy credit card number without seeing the tiny padlock icon on thy status bar.
8.) Thou shalt not reply to the e-mail from the Nigerian banker.
9.) Thou shalt not forward chain letters to thy friends and family.
10.) Thou shalt not use "password" as thy password, nor thy birthday, nor thy children's' names.

Thin Clients
I have been trying thin client machines from HP and Wyse.
There are versions with XP, Windows CE, and Linux.
There are no moving parts on these machine. The operating system is embedded in the solid state memory. No disks, no need for updates, or patches (only seldom for example when embedded Vista comes out next year.) No need for virus protection.
Plenty of USB ports, keyboard, video and monitors ports.
Has a browser on board so can access the internet. Can use remote desktop or Cytrix to access applications on servers.
So it is easy to survive and thrive with the browser, and use the Google and competitive internet based applications.
So far these things are still perceived as a too expensive for general use but I think they represent the future of personal computing.
The system units will likely take the form of cellular telephones in the near future with ports for input devices (keyboards, pointing devices, voice recognition on-board).
Does anyone have any experience with thin clients to share? Especially interested in remote management. And installing software updates.
Thanks

Warning about Firefox 3
Hi, all!
I didn't know if this belongs here, but for those of you who use Firefox, I got this email from ZDNet. I trust them -I get great email updates from them every day.

<<Just a heads up: Since Firefox download sites are clogged today, you may be tempted to use an alternate URL you see posted somewhere on the web in order to get the latest version. Be careful, though, because I’ve seen at least one of these links lead to a purported spyware program instead of a browser. Windows users should be especially vigilant.
According to Mozilla, “Firefox 3 is currently only being offered as a full download from view link It might take you longer to get it from there, but if you want to be safe I recommend you stick with the official site, or at least some site that you know and trust.
Ed Burnette has programmed everything from device drivers and compilers to video games and multi-user servers. He is currently writing enterprise software in a variety of languages including C, Ruby, Python, and Java. For disclosure of Ed's industry affiliations, click here.
