Tripod buying

Any advice on buying a tripod for use with my new Nikon D5100 DSLR would be appreciated. I know these may be contradictory, but I Need light enough to carry, but sturdy. Will use 70% outdoors for nature photos and 30 % indoors (during winter mostly) for portrait and tabletop photos.

What features to look for and which to avoid, what brands offer good value and durability, etc. are all questions of interest.

Technical question

I recently acquired my late fathers Pentax SP500 and i'm having battery issues. The original batt. number is PX400 it's 1.35 volts. The present number is 387S that is 1.55 volts. all the info i've been able to google on it the SP500 has bridged circutry to handle it. My problem is the needle in the view finder for the light meter is pegged to the top regardless of shutter speed and lighting.

Photographer Rights

There are periodic posts in various groups about photographer “rights” and when it is OK or not OK to take pictures. This link is a recent (Sept. 2011) article from the ACLU on the subject. Since it is the ACLU, they are mostly concerned about individual interactions with law-enforcement and other “officials” (who frequently don’t know the law themselves), but this article also covers more general applications too.

The bottom line is that if you are in a public space and not otherwise breaking the law, you have the legal right to take a picture of anything or anybody you want. (God Bless America).

If you are on private property (malls and stores are usually private property) then the owner of the property may set the rules and allow or disallow photography as they please. If it is not posted or announced however, it may be assumed that photography is allowed.

Furthermore, as the photographer you and you alone have all “rights” to any image you take and you may do anything you want with it, including selling it or posting it online. A company may be wise to have a “release” before using an image for commercial product or service promotion, but the legal exposure is related to the commercial use and the legal burden is on the company doing the commercial promotion, not the original photographer (although a company may not buy your picture if you cannot provide that release as a courtesy).

Cruise Pictures

I enjoy taking a lot of pictures when I go on a cruise. I put them on a CD and give them away to friends. Also take pctures of events of my Rotary club.

Take a Walk with Me

For the last 18-months I have been debating whether or not to buy one of the new large-sensor non-SLR cameras that are currently hot. These include the Olympus PEN line, Panasonic GF-1/GF-2, the Sony NEX cameras and the Sigma Foveon sensor compacts. The truth is that I don’t know how much I would use such a camera, and we already have several small-sensor compacts for those times when I want to travel light.

There is a little township park about a mile from our house, and I like to take walks down there when the weather is nice. The weather has been gorgeous for several days, and I went down there this morning for a “constitutional” with one of the li’l-ol’ cheapie compacts we have. My conclusion is the same as before; with enough processing (especially noise reduction), and in a small display size, the output from an inexpensive small-sensor compact can be quite acceptable and I probably shouldn’t waste my money on yet another camera.
