Junior gets rid of part of Jr motorsports

JR MOTORSPPORTS
Dale Earnhardt Jr. revealed Thursday that he is now sharing ownership of JR Motorsports with his sister and long time business manager Kelly and his cousin and former Sprint Cup crew chief Tony Eury Jr.

Earnhardt was in Las Vegas, site of this week’s champion’s celebration, to accept his seventh consecutive Most Popular Driver Award. He talked with reporters afterwards about his season and the future of the race team he owns with his current NASCAR Sprint Cup boss Rick Hendrick.

Besides the ownership revelation Earnhardt said the JR Motorsports team, which competes in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series, was in ‘dire need’ of sponsorship and in fact at this point won’t even be able to run an entire season with driver Kelly Bires who took over for Brad Keselowski who is heading to Penske Racing next season. Longtime sponsor GoDaddy.com is moving to the Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 Sprint Cup series with driver Mark Martin..
Gee he got Eury a big deal cuz "its family" Lucky dude !!.

ogano, Hendrick, Martin Win Sporting News awards

AWARDS

Joey Logano, at 19, the youngest driver to win a Sprint Cup Series race, is the Sporting News rookie of the year, the magazine announced Wednesday.
Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick is owner of the year, and Mark Martin is the 2009 Dale Earnhardt Tough Driver. The top driver and crew chief will be announced Thursday. All five awards were voted on by Sprint Cup drivers, crew chiefs and owners.

Logano, driving Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 20 made famous by Tony Stewart, finished 20th in the points standings. He won one race and finished in the top five three times and in the top 10 seven times.
Logano’s win came in the Lenox 301 in June at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
“It was definitely a big deal to get The Home Depot a win, to get the No. 20 team a win—they’d won at least one every year since they’ve been going,” Logano said. “So that was something really cool to keep going for them.
“It was a big momentum builder. I had my tough times in the beginning of the season, but I feel like when we come to these places now, we’re a lot better.”
Hendrick Motorsports had a historic season. Hendrick driver Jimmie Johnson set a series record with his fourth consecutive championship, and Hendrick drivers—Johnson, Martin and Jeff Gordon—finished 1-2-3 in the final standings, the first time drivers from the same team claimed the top three spots.
“Rick has been talking about that 1-2-3 finish in the points,” Hendrick Motorsports general manager Marshall Carlson said after the Ford 400, the final race of the season. “It’s never been done. And behind the curtain to see how these guys race together in an extremely competitive environment is really phenomenal, and that’s a credit to Rick’s leadership.”
All told, Hendrick drivers won 13 races and 12 poles. Only Dale Earnhardt Jr. failed to win a race or qualify for the year-end Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Martin was one of the big stories of the year. At the age of 50, Martin raced full time for the first time since 2006 and put together one of the best seasons in a career that began in 1981. He won five races, a series-high seven poles and his bid for his first championship didn’t end until the final race of the season.
“At Phoenix, when we were leading, I couldn’t see a lot of guys in our mirror, because we had a nice lead,” Johnson said. “But I looked up on the pylon and saw he was fourth and said, ‘There he is.’ He’s not affected by pressure. He’s not affected by situations, and he’s going to give a hundred percent every time he’s in the car—so the only way you beat him is by giving a hundred percent.”

The No. 42 team most valuable pit crew

A+ STOPSExcellent pit stops can make or break a race and a season for a team. For Juan Montoya and his No. 42 Chevrolet, his pit crew helped him gain a spot in the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup, challenge the front of the field throughout the season and finish eighth in the Cup Series standings.

Mechanix Wear has announced that the No. 42 pit crew from Earnhardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates is the winner of the Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award for the 2009 season.

This award is the only authentic competition voted on by crew chiefs. The No. 42 pit crew was selected for its fast pit stops, flawless performance and incredible effort during the 36-race season. The team also won the Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award for the third quarter.

The No. 42 pit crew will travel to Las Vegas to be honored at the annual Cup Series celebration, and also will take home the Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew trophy and the $100,000 grand prize.

Crew chief, Brian Pattie of the No. 42 pit crew is proud of the impressive job his team did during the 2009 season.

"Most of these guys on Team Target have been together for some time now," Pattie said, "and it's really nice to see them recognized for the great job that they do week in and week out. They played a huge role in us making it into the Chase for the Sprint Cup and I am really proud of them."

D.Patrick

Danica Patrick has a rough sketch of what her NASCAR schedule would look like. She has an idea of what series to start in. Her IndyCar owner is onboard.

Now all the popular driver needs is a car to race.

Speaking with owner Michael Andretti during a teleconference on Tuesday, Patrick said she still doesn't have a NASCAR deal in place. A photo on Patrick's Web site showing her wearing a NASCAR fire suit - a picture that was quickly taken down - suggests something might be in the works, but nothing has been announced yet.

``We've been working this and talking to people since summer,'' she said. ``We are serious about this. Whether it comes together or not, we won't know. But there's no contract and there's no deal right now. As I've said, if I can do both I would like to do that.''

Patrick said later in the day at the Motorsports Marketing Forum in Las Vegas that she met with various teams and owners in Charlotte, N.C., and was ``starting to work a little harder with certain people.''

``It's just complicated,'' the 27-year-old driver said. ``Sponsors usually get the best of the complications of things because there's a lot of them - which is a good problem - but it's complicated.''

Patrick cleared one major hurdle in securing a NASCAR deal by signing a three-year contract extension - two years with a mutual option - with Andretti Autosport on Monday.

That same day, a photo of her wearing a racing suit with a JR Motorsports and other NASCAR-related logos showed up on her Web site before quickly being removed. Patrick reportedly has a deal in the works to drive a limited Nationwide schedule for JR Motorsports, a team owned by Rick Hendrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

So far, though, no word.

What Patrick apparently does have is a plan.

She's already talked to Andretti about what her schedule might look like, with most of the NASCAR racing coming before and after the IndyCar season.

``Yes, we did work that out,'' Patrick said during the teleconference. ``The primary focus is IndyCar and the Indy 500, but in and around that there is opportunity to drive the (stock) car as well.''

Patrick also has an idea of where she might start in NASCAR.

As appealing as it might be to jump into a Sprint Cup car - not to mention financially lucrative - she understands it might not make the most sense. Starting off with a few ARCA races or in the Nationwide series would give her a chance to get a feel for stock cars, adjust to what's expected to be a sharp learning curve without the glare of Sprint Cup's bright spotlight.

``In all the talks over the summer and meeting with people, there was a lot of emphasis on learning,'' Patrick said. ``So I'd be prepared to start small and grow and really learn the cars. If it were to happen, I'd be open to all suggestions.''

Patrick said at the forum that she was surprised when other drivers advised her to take it slow and not jump straight into Sprint Cup races.

``Most people were like, 'No, no, no, no, no. We won't even do it. We want you to be successful and you're not going to do that by jumping in the deep end,''' Patrick said.

Patrick said it would be hard to measure herself against other drivers who have moved to NASCAR because they haven't driven for top teams.

``None of the guys that have transitioned over from open-wheel racing to NASCAR have gone and driven for Hendrick or Roush or you know, any of the top teams, so I think it's hard to judge them totally,'' she said. ``But I think it also sets the standard that it's complicated and it's tough and there's a lot to learn.''

She has the green light from her owner.

Andretti started his career in CART, tried his hand at Formula One, then came back to CART before becoming a team owner. He knows what it's like for a driver to want new challenges.

``For her to go out there and really give it a try, I don't want to get in her way if she wants to do that,'' said Andretti, who recently purchased sole ownership of Andretti Autosport from Kim Green and Kevin Savoree.

``We'll have to work the programs to make sure the IndyCar is still her main focus because the main goal is still to win Indianapolis and win the championship with Danica, and I think we have a good shot at it.''

What Patrick may not have is a lot of time.

She's set for the IRL season, which doesn't begin until March 14 in Brazil. The NASCAR season starts in February, at Daytona. To have a NASCAR program ready in time, she'll likely have to get started soon.

``I think we still have time,'' she said. ``Obviously, it's February when they (NASCAR) start, so there's not as much time as there is for an IndyCar season, but there's still time. Even if things go until the last minute, there's a little bit of time left.''

Everything else seems to be in place.

Johnson again drives Rolex 24 race

THE ROLEX 24Johnson again will drive Rolex 24 endurance race
By NASCAR.COM
December 2, 2009

Jimmie Johnson will get a head start on the competition in 2010, driving for Bob Stallings' race team in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series' season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 30-31.

Johnson, who clinched a record fourth consecutive Cup Series championship in 2009, has competed in five of the past six Rolex 24 races. In addition to the second-place finish with GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing in 2008, Johnson also was part of 2005's second-place Howard/Boss Motorsports Pontiac Crawford team.

Johnson made his first Rolex 24 start with the same team a year earlier and then returned in 2007 for not only the Rolex 24 but also that summer's Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona with Riley Motorsports.

"I've really enjoyed running with Bob and the GAINSCO team the past couple of years," Johnson said. "Anyone who knows Bob knows that he's very passionate about racing, and it shows in his team and his ability to bring out the best in everyone. Jon [Fogarty] and Alex [Gurney] are two of the best [drivers] and I really enjoyed being teammates with them and Jimmy Vasser in the last two Rolex 24 hour events.

"Bob does a great job of keeping the team at the top, especially when you consider the competition from teams like Ganassi and some others. They are a threat each week and that says a lot about the team that Bob has put together."

Johnson, Gurney and Fogarty all led the 2008 Rolex 24 and joined Vasser in keeping the No. 99 in contention for the overall win throughout the race. Although Johnson brings a great deal of publicity and media attention to the GAINSCO team, the biggest benefit of having him back each year is his proven ability to win races and championships.

"We view Jimmie as a member of our team and we look forward to winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona together," Stallings said. "Jimmie is a terrific race car driver and has been a quick study driving the Red Dragon. He is very focused and highly competitive in every way imaginable. He is a champion and shares our strong desire to win the 24."

Live coverage of the 2010 Rolex 24 at Daytona begins on SPEED at 3 p.m. ET on Jan. 30 and lasts until 10 p.m. Coverage resumes at 7 a.m. ET on Jan. 31 and will run to the finish at 4 p.m. ET

JUST CHAD

Crew chief Chad Knaus' rapport with Jimmie Johnson runs deep
By Rea White - Associate EditorMonday, November 30, 2009
Crew chief Chad Knaus has guided Jimmie Johnson to four NASCAR Cup championships at Hendrick Motorsports.David Griffin

Hendrick Motorsports crew chief Chad Knaus may be a perfect balancing agent for driver Jimmie Johnson.

Knaus appears to be the fierier of the two, but when it comes to races, he knows how to offset the emotions of his driver at any given point. He's the only full-time crew chief that Johnson has ever had in NASCAR’s Cup series since his debut in 2001, and the two have certainly learned how to deal well with each other.

They seem to be not only a championship-winning combination, but also a good personality mix.

"Jimmie is, obviously, typically very mellow, which counters my aggressiveness, I guess you would say, very well," Knaus says. "So when he starts to get upset and we get in the race car and we get in the race, I try very hard to maintain a level head and a calm mentality, and I think that that helps with Jimmie. When he starts to get excited, I know that I need to try to interact a little bit and try to calm things down. But most of the time he typically doesn't get too anxious."

"We've been able to balance each other out over the years," Johnson says.

It's hard to imagine the level of pressure the two have faced through their four consecutive Cup championship runs, buy they seem to just continue to improve.

In 291 Cup starts together, they have amassed 47 victories. They have 180 top-10 finishes, 117 of them top-fives. They also have 23 pole positions. And, of course, the unprecedented four consecutive titles.

While Johnson's driving talent has been widely touted, Knaus has functioned more in the shadows. That doesn’t mean he fails to get credit, at least within his organization, for his own level of expertise and performance.

But in many ways, it may all come down to the melding of personalities.

Johnson says that he and his future crew chief connected from the start.

Lets celebrate

NASCAR CELEBRATION

">LAS VEGAS

December 1, 2009 ·
The NASCAR community has only begun to descend on Las Vegas, but it's already clear that this Champion's Week will be very different from those that preceded it. In New York, for instance, the show-car "Victory Lap" around Midtown had to be discontinued because of complaints from locals and increasing fees from the city. In Las Vegas, the parade hasn't only been revived; it's been embellished with pit stops and burnouts.
