We Bet This Flick's A Real Turkey!

BY ANNA SUDAR • Advocate Reporter • November 21, 2009
HEATH -- Many people think of Thanksgiving as a day for family, football and pumpkin pie.
But Jordan Downey always will associate the holiday with a deranged turkey stalking college students through the woods of Licking County.
Downey, a Granville native, and his friend Kevin Stewart created the movie "ThanksKilling" in 2007 when they were film production students at Loyola Marymount University.
The independent film was released on DVD on Tuesday and will premiere in Columbus on Sunday at Studio 35 Cinema and Drafthouse.
The 70-minute movie tells the story of five college students on their way home for Thanksgiving break and are killed off one by one by an evil turkey.
Downey and Smith came up with the idea for the film during their junior year after watching a bad horror movie.
"I've always been a horror fan, especially the cheesy straight-to-DVD movies," Downey said. "But we got tired of them. So many had cool posters and tag lines but were not entertaining. So we decided to make one as a joke."
Within a few hours, the friends had developed the concept for their movie. They decided it would take place on Thanksgiving --a holiday not often mentioned in horror films -- and have a unique villain.
"We wanted to create a movie, but we didn't want to do the same old thing about a guy in a mask," Downey said.

So What Have You Watched Lately?

Saw an interesting horror flick with Malcolm McDowell the other night, called "Island Of The Dead" (2000) -- set on Hart Island, where the unclaimed dead of New York are buried in mass graves. McDowell is a developer who wants to use the island as a "city" for homeless people who'll be paid subjects of nasty medical research. One problem: seems the island has evolved its own brand of flies and maggots that have gotten used to eating human flesh. After the "groundbreaking," Malcolm and some cops and a small convict work crew get marooned there overnight. The movie seemed a lot more plausible than it sounds -- very creepy.
Despite what it says on the DVD cover above, the havoc had nothing to do with them disturbing the dead, though they did that – it was more from the “It’s Not Nice To Fool Mother Nature!” genre. It got viciously bad reviews, but I enjoyed it.
One thing that didn’t make sense: toward the end, Malcolm gleefully blows up a building for no apparent reason. I guess some directors think every movie needs an explosion.
It’s not to be confused, of course, with the recent George Romero zombie sequel with the same title.
So what have you watched lately?

my very own horror story: the final chapter
Hallelujah, I am OUT of the homeless shelter! Still looking for a permanent apartment, but I have comfortable temporary quarters and am looking through my storage trying to find my TV, DVD/VHS player, and movies! Meanwhile, I have even managed to pick up a few new-to-my-collection DVDs including "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome", the 1970s "Tales from the Crypt/Vault of Horror" double feature, "Konga", and "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol"! I have a lot to be thankful for, and I know your prayers and good wishes have helped--thank you all!

Escape from New York (1981)
The year is 1997. Due to huge crime rates, the United States turns its once great city of New York into a maximum security prison where hardcore criminals are put for life. All the bridges leading into the city are mined, a large wall is built along the shoreline and a large police force army is based there to stop or kill any attempted escapees. En route to a conference, the President, on board Air Force One, is forced to eject in a pod when a female terrorist takes over the controls and crashes the plane into a building. A new prisoner, ex-soldier Snake Plissken is offered his freedom if he goes in, frees the President and finds a tape with important information for the conference. Snake agrees but to ensure his co-operation he is injected with a small but powerful explosive that will only be destroyed if his mission is successful. Snake must set out into the decaying city, filled with immoral criminals, and he must succeed - for his own life.
