The year was 1905 and Mae West was heading for her 12th birthday. Her professional title back than was "BABY MAY, Song and Dance." She had not yet altered the spelling to MAE.
By 1905, this little busy bee had already been performing in amateur competions and with Brooklyn stock companies for a number of years when she sat for this portrait.

I have been a fan of Mae West since the late 60s. My university had movie nights where you could see old movies for $1. A lot of the movies were Mae West, W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, etc. I guess because they were cheap to rent. One of my greatest prizes was a record of Mae singing various songs. On the flip side was dialogue from W.C. Fields.
Mae was, to me, as she said about a man in her movies "no oyl paintin', but a fascinatin' monster."
