HTML Workshop FYI

Welcome! It's Great to Have You Here! The HTML workshop was started way back by LeeInFl. There's been many changes in the group and on Eons since that time. And now there are more changes! The HTML Workshop has merged with "Creating a Web Page" and "CSS Web Design" which are now private sister groups.
Everyone is welcome to discuss all areas of website creation here in the Workshop. Feel free to post tips, trick or techniques. We'd love to hear what works for you. If you have some links to tutorials, online tools, how-to's, or other great sites, we'd love for you to share them.
We can even discuss Eons, LOL. The replies in this sticky will include some Basic HTML Tags that can be used on Eons. If you have any questions about how to use the tags, just ask. We love to help!
Your ideas, tips and suggestions to improve the group are very welcome. Also, if you have a question or a problem, just post and we'll see if we can help! Let's have some fun as we learn!

Posting Links to Your Own Website

We'd love to see what you've done with any web site you've created - personal, non-profit or business. It would especially be helpful if you are seeking help for a problem you are having. However, Eons limits where certain links can be posted. So, to avoid misunderstandings and for consistency, please link to any web site you created with this method:

1) Create a link from your Eons profile page or Eons blog to your personal web site.
2) Then, post a simple message inviting us to go to your Eons profile or Eons blog to view the link.

This method will keep the TOU's between you and Eons. Eons Community Guidelines  - Eons TOU's Besides, it's another way to invite people to check out your Eons profile page!

Online Tool for Fonts and Background Color

Here's a neat tool to play with different fonts and backgrounds, Font Tester: view link www.fonttester.com/ You can use it just to get an idea of how different fonts and styles will look on different colored backgrounds. If you are using CSS to style your pages, this tool will give you the code when you are through comparing and are ready to choose. I'll let the creator of the tool explain what it can do!

Quote from site:

"Font Tester is a tool I've written to make the whole process of comparing different fonts (and choosing the right color scheme) much easier and faster. All you have to do is supply it with the text you would like to preview, then modify the various CSS properties of that text to find a style you are comfortable with. You can change the font's size, it's family, it's alignment, it's line height, whether or not it is bold/italic/underline, it's letter spacing, it's word spacing, it's indentation, and even it's direction.

You can also choose what color and background color you would like for your text using the real-time color picker."

You can compare up to three columns of the same text at one setting. Once you are through, you can grab the CSS of the column of your choice - or more than one if you want different fonts on certain sections.

Your Opinion Desired (Repost)

Ooops, seems the sticky view link about posting links to your own business sites was missed by jeff1608. The original message contained links to and a little discussion of his business. I've sent a PM to jeff1608 explaining what is being done and giving a link to the sticky.

Since there was good info in replies given to the original message, I'm reposting portions of the original message and DeanH's replies (minus business names and links).

Please understand, we can give web design advice, suggestions or tips - just not discuss our products and/or business or post links to our business sites (except in the Eons Marketplace group). I know this could be confusing, so I'll add some examples of how we can post for web design help in the sticky.

Frameworks and Free Templates

Reposted from a reply in another thread

Next topic.

In my web-poking, I came across Frameworks and Free Templates. Here are two related links.

Wondering if anyone here could offer thoughts on these, especially for a beginner. The examples and samples certainly ignite my mind and motivate focused work

In the same vein. I throughly read the Zen Garden a year of so ago. From that reading, i sensed "standards," "templates," and now, "Frameworks" collect the macros of XML land?

Thanks for any and all thoughts.

Mike

So, what do you think?

Kompozer: Free HTML Editor

Everyone has their preferences for writing HTML and/or creating web sites. Some prefer to do all the coding by hand. Others use HTML editors to help with some or most of the coding work.

Me? I need all the help I can get LOL. I generally use Kompozer - a free, WYSIWYG HTML editor. view link www.kompozer.net/ Kompozer has versions for Windows, Macs and Linux. It's fairly simple to learn to use and creates generally clean code.

You can use it like a word processor - choosing font, text color, style, size, etc. Then you can look at the source view and see all the wonderful HTML code.

Here are two help files with lots of screen shots that gives instructions on using Kompozer:

Introduction to Kompozer: view link ccs.110mb.com/eons/IntroductionToKomp. html

Kompozer part 2 - Adding an image: view link ccs.110mb.com/how/AddingImageWKompozer. html

If you don't already have a preference for an HTML editor, you might what to check it out. Feel free to ask any questions that you might have. We'd love to help if you decide to download it and learn to use it.

If you have a different editor that you use, we'd love to hear about it.

Important Thread in CT&I Group

In case you've missed it, there's a discussion going on in the CT&I group about attacks being made via Flash videos, etc. view link www.eons.com/groups/topic/1915016-New- Flash-Attack-has-no-Fix-Everyone- Vulnerable

"The attack can occur on Websites that accept user-generated content -- anything from Webmail to social networking sites." There is no quick fix.

OldGuy46 and tallbob have suggested some things that you can do to try to protect yourself. Others may make suggestions in the thread, so it might be a good idea to read the info and then subscribe to the message.

Creating a Website with a Template

One method (there are many) of creating a web site is by using a template and an HTML editor.

I use a free css template from view link www.freecsstemplates.org/ and a free HTML editor, Kompozer, view link www.kompozer.net/ The template site has a great number of templates released under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 license (requires link back) and which are w3C standards compliant and are valid (XHTML Strict). The templates even come with the images that are used with them. Of course, you could use the templates with a different editor or you could hand code the HTML.

This file, Using the "connections" Template, view link ccs.110mb.com/eons/usingcontemp.html gives a brief overview of how to download one of the templates. The file also contains some links to "jing" movies that show how to make two changes in the css file and how to use the editor to create links, move the content blocks and a few other things.

This is just one example of how you can create a web site. Feel free to give feedback and/or make suggestions. If you have any questions about any of the steps or would like more information, just ask! If you'd like to share some information about how you get started and what you use, you're welcome to post here or start a new thread, if you want.

Have Fun!

Using a Hosting Site's Built-in Editor

Many hosting sites also provide a choice to use the site's built-in editor, templates and images or that might be their only choice. This can be a quick, easy way to create a website. Generally, you don't need to know any coding and some sites provide help files or tutorials on using their editors.

So, what are the drawbacks?
1.) The templates and images that are provided by the hosting company are under copyright. If the site shuts down, or you chose to leave, you don't have the right to simply upload their template and images to a new site.
2.) Some offer a "free domain" with their service. However, some also register that domain under their name, so if you chose to leave or they shut down, you might have trouble getting control of the domain name. You might not be able to get it at all.

Whether or not you would choose to use a web hosting site's free editor would depend a great deal on the type of site you are building. It could be a great way to quickly create a temporary site (ball team, reunion, etc). It could even be a way to quickly have a site while you learn how to create your own HTML files and styles.

However, if you are creating a business site or a large site aimed at a wide audience, you might want to consider creating your own HTML files, registering your own domain name, and choosing a site that does not place ads on your pages - maybe even choosing a paid hosting site, LOL.
