Scavenger Hunt – Boundary Waters – USA and Canada

I have started reading a new series of mysteries written by William Kent Krueger, which are set in Northern Minnesota near the Boundary Waters and feature a local sheriff, Cork O’Connor. I became fascinated with the Boundary Waters and decided to check them out on Google Earth. This, of course, led to a scavenger hunt.

Same rules apply as all previous scavenger hunts. Eons’ virtual gifts will be awarded to the best five scores. Please PM your answers to me.

Scavenger Hunt ends at noon (EDT) Sunday, August 31, 2008.

Remember, the purpose is to have fun first and learn something along the way.

You will need to download Google Earth 4.3 to answer a couple of the questions; so if you haven’t already, download it now.

Questions are in the first reply. >

My Hometown - Vancouver, Washington

The biggest thing to happen near Vancouver occurred 27 years before my husband and I retired to the Pacific Northwest. It was the 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens. The local phone book has the same picture of the eruption on the front cover every year - they change the hue; other than that - it's the same dramatic picture. I tried to find it on Google Earth but it was not there.

1. Before the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980, when and where was the most recent volcanic eruption in the 48 contiguous states?

2. Sauvie Island is the home to some of the largest lavender farms in the Vancouver-Portland area. It also has the distinction of being on a "Top 250" list. What list is that?

3. Post your favorite photo of the area.

Any advise on how to make data interesting?

Hi,

I'm the Earthwatch webmaster, and one of the things I want to do with Google Earth is to start presenting more information about our expeditions - both scientific data and information about being a volunteer (Earthwatch expeditions allow people to volunteer for 1 - 2 weeks on real scientific research projects all over the world).

I was on our Puerto Rico's Rainforest project last fall, and I have scads of data - tracks of where I went, transects we walked and the tree information we collected, lat/long of my photos, the borders of the forest we worked in... in other words, LOTS.

But I don't want to just throw it all up in one big pile - I'd like to find a way to present the whole picture of what it's like to do a field research project - living and working there.

If anyone has suggestions, or good examples to share, I'd love to hear/see them!

tx,
Kathy

A Trip to The Mall (no shopping required)

I live outside Washington, DC. Fascinating city, our nation's capital, and lots of monuments and museums, almost too much. Rather than try to do it all we will focus on the "Central Park" of the city, The National Mall.

Photobucket

To complete this scavenger hunt you will need to find the purple dot for The National Mall (fortunately it is not buried in a sea of blue dots) and drill down to the full article and then use the links within.

1. What is the distance from the Capitol steps to the Lincoln Memorial?

2. Who is the primary sculptor on the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial?

3. What type of art is displayed at the Freer Gallery of Art?

4. When is the United States Botanical Garden closed?

5. Who originally conceived the idea of the National Mall?

I'm not going to request a photo, too many to choose from. Enjoy your tour of our capital!

My Hometown - Boonville California

I actually lived in several places in Anderson Valley, Mendocino County, California.
However, the majority of my formative years were spent in Boonville. A very small town in Northern California, but well known by many. The area has changed over the years. While I was growing up, the local economy was based on timber and agriculture. Today the wine industry, and along with that the tourist industry, has moved to the forefront.

1. What is Boonville best known for? (purple dot)

2. What does "It's bahl hornin'," mean? (purple dot)

3. List the different festivals held at the fairgrounds each year. (purple dot)

4. Name the two authors that have written novels using Boonville as the setting. (purple dot)

5. Since there are very few posted photos of this area, travel northwest a bit to the Mendocino Coast and post your favorite photograph.

Cheddar Gorge and Caves, England

I was doing some research this morning about cheeses and came upon the fact that Cheddar Cheese was first made in the Cheddar Gorge area of England. The farm women discovered that the more yellow the cheese the better it sold at the local markets and they added a vegetable dye to make a more intense color and stimulate sales...

And of course, this sent me off to Google earth to explore the Cheddar Gorge and Caves:

1. What important archaeological find was discovered in the area in 1903? (Purple Dot)

2. What was discovered in Gough's Cave in 2007? (Purple Dot)

3. Post your favorite picture from the area...

Madagascar

I TiVo Craig Ferguson every night and watch it when I have time. One that I watched last night was recorded on Madagascar's "National Day" - Craig had a lot of fun with that one.

But it sent me to Google Earth. I knew where the country is but little else:

1. How many species of baobab are endemic to Madagascar? What the heck is a baobab and how many species besides the ones in Madagascar exist? (Purple dot and link)

2. Madagascar is home to what percentage of the world's plant and animal species? (Purple dot)

3. There is an "Earthwatch" symbol on Madagascar. What is the purpose of their interest in Madagascar?

4. Post your favorite picture from Madagascar.
