Rules Of Freedom Matters

In life there must be rules. We, the moderators, do not attempt to silence any voice unless that voice defies the rules of our group. Here are the simple rules of Freedom Matters I adopted from the rules of Eons.
1) Links must be provided to all articles posters wish other members to peruse. If a post is made that is only the cut and pasted text of an article written by others it will be deleted ….with no explanation given.
2) There will be no personal attacks (name calling) tolerated.
3) No e-mails may be posted in the group.

No one is more responsible for the productivity and direction of our group than you….the individual member. If you have questions about a deletion read the rules and figure out which rule (or rules) were broken. If you still can’t figure it out contact a moderator, via a PM, for a brief explanation.

Congrats to Obama

This group is very quiet about the Presidents speech at West Point so I'll start by offering my opinion. I am pleased that the President only took 90 days to come up with his decision. I am pleased to learn that our President knows more about military tactics and strategy than the Generals he put in charge. I'm pleased that he looked at Bush's play book and decided that a surge in Afghanistan might work as well as the one he wouldn't acknowledge worked in Iraq. What I don't like is his lack of passion and emotion in his speech. I am also not pleased with the way he tried to cover his ass by announcing that we will start withdrawing 18 months after we get there. This is the first war that has an end date that we've announced. I am not peased that the rest of the world is scratching thier heads trying to figure this President out

One thing that has come out of this campaign speech of his is that he now owns it. Like I've said before, this will be his Viet Nam. Even Newt is praising Obama

States Rights

Will it ever be possible to eliminate governmental entities known as 'states' to be replaced with mega counties? Instead of 50 states with seperate laws and with overlapping bureaucracies to economize the three tiers of government into two?

I don't expect this thread to last very long. Most will think this a stupid idea.

Changing times?

The following quote is from the platform of the Populist party meeting in St. Louis in 1892 "We meet in the midst of a nation brought to the verge of moral, political, and material ruin. Corruption dominates the ballot-box, the legislature,, the congress, and touches even the ermine of the bench. The people are demoralized...the newspapers are largely subsidized or muzzled, public opinion silenced...The fruits of the toil of millions are boldly stolen to build up colossal fortunes for the few...From the same prolific womb of governmental injustice we breed the two great classes-tramps and millionaires". I made this post because it seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same. In 1892 business and government had formed an unholy alliance which was forcing average, hard working farmers and laborers to the brink of extinction. Thousands died toiling for the railroads and factories. More were killed by strikebreakers and strong arm tactics by employers. Things are not as bad now as they were in 1892 but the trend downward is not encouraging for working people. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, all with the help of government. Workers get laid off, the fat cats get obscene bonuses. While this is going on, most Americans seem to be watching sports, American Idol, Entertainment Tonight or worrying about who Paris Hilton is doing this week. OK, that's my rant for the day. Thanks for listening.

GW's 1st year in office

view link

1. Significantly eased field-testing controls of genetically engineered crops.
2. Cut federal spending on libraries by $39 million.
3. Cut $35 million in funding for doctors to get advanced pediatric training.
4. Cut funding for research into renewable energy sources by 50%.
5. Revoked rules that reduced the acceptable levels of arsenic in drinking water.
6. Blocked rules that would require federal agencies to offer bilingual assistance to non-English speaking persons. This, from a candidate who would readily fire-up his Spanish-speaking skills in front of would-be Hispanic voters.
7. Proposed to eliminate new marine protections for the Channel Islands and the coral reefs of northwest Hawaii (please see San Francisco Chronicle, April 6, 2001).
8. Cut funding for research into cleaner, more efficient cars and trucks by 28%
9. Suspended rules that would have strengthened the government's ability to deny contracts to companies that violated workplace safety, environmental and other federal laws.
10. Approved the sending of letters by Interior Department appointee Gale Norton to state officials soliciting suggestions for opening up national monuments for oil and gas drilling, coal mining, and foresting.
