Do you think that film stars and personalities deserve some privacy.?
I know their lives are open the a certain amount of scrutiny, it comes with the job but what happened to respect for others no matter who they are. If they are eating in a restraunt, or shopping I believe they should be allowed to do so without the press in particular following them every moment.
When is it OK to ask for an autograph and when is it not?

Hello
Thanks for the invitation to join your group. Im looking forward to some great conversation in here and really like the idea of being able to have my view without the fear of retaliation!
Im pretty liberal on alot of things but I can also turn very quickly on other subjects and be very conservative. I can also very easily sit on the fence because i really do have the ability to "most of the time" see the other persons point of view. I may not agree with it but i can see it and sometimes will choose to not take sides.
This should be a fun group thanks again for inviting me!

Don't Talk about That...
I posted this as a topic on another group.
I would welcome your input.
Wish I had paid attention to science class in high school!
***********
What are the topics that are Too sensitive to talk about?
At one time you couldn't say the earth revolved around the sun.
Couldn't talk about forces like gravity as that is a god's mysterious providence.
Couldn't talk about geological periods over millions of years?
Could not talk about natural selection as a mechanism of evolution?
Could not speak of the "Big bang"?
Is science still a topic that is off limits to civil discussion?

Opinions
I value people with opinions. I don't care what their opinions are, just that it is important to have them.
When I ask someone their opinion on something, and they say "I don't know. I never thought about it." I think, how can you be so unconscious?
I constantly use my English classes to 'teach life' to my students. They are engineering students, mid twenties, not young kids. I always use big topics for conversation, and will ask their opinions. And so often I get that "I don't know" answer. The shoulder shrug.
Early in my working career, I had a situation arise at work that was uncomfortable, and I said "It's OK. I don't care." My boss looked at me with a stern face, and said.
"Care! Always care! Don't ever not care!." Boy, that stuck with me. And ever since, I have always cared --- often passionately -- about everything.
I urge my students to do the same. Care and opine.

Hello
Well, this sounds like a very interesting place to be. Trippin I checked out your profile, and I have to say I love your style with your son. Too few parents know how to teach and punish at the same time. Most just grab a stick. I have a grandson that is ADD/ADHD from a disease he has called Cyliacs. He has to have punishments that last a long time and that require him to stop and think. His father had to punish him for getting into the tool box when he was told not to, so he made him carry the box everywhere he went for the whole day. It was one of those small ones, so not too heavy, but very uncomfortable when he wanted to go up stairs to his room and then back down and out in the yard and back to the kitchen...etc... He really learned a lesson and it gave the rest of the family a smile.
I enjoy gardens and the out of doors. I have camped for most of my life with my parents and then with my husbands over the years. Too old now to get up and down from the tent floor, so I tend to get out in nature and then into a hotel.
I thank you for inviting me to this group and I look forward to some spiritual debate. I DO watch TV...fox news, but then you knew that didn't you? LOL I do watch other news shows just to be up on what is being said and to be sure I have some extra views of the big issues. I make up my own mind and I am very set in many views. I beleive strongly that when people say they are for peace, they need to really know what is involved in that statement. Are you for peace when it suits you? Are you for peace so you don't have to get into battle for someone else, but will knock someone's block off if they try to rape you wife? It is not so simple when we are speaking of criminals who run and control whole countries. It's hard enough when we have to catch and render judgment on a mass murderer, but even harder when we are talking about a leader of a country. Just how far does this country go to protect others, innocent people? Why can't we protect innocent people in other countries, rather than just fighting when we have a vested interest? We are a super power, doesn't that come with responsiblity to be peace keepers of the world? If we hide from the big issues does that mean no one will help us if we need it? Issues! My grandson says he has 'issues' and he keeps them in his nose! (I think he heard tissues, but then....) Bright blessings to all, Astrid

People of Different Views
It is so interesting to me that people can have such a variety of opinions and believe those opinions so strongly. Both sides, all sides, have highly intelligent people so even if you are on the other side politically speaking, you have to admit somehow there can be two sides that are truely vieable options. That's hard to see when you are looking across at that 'other' side. we tend to think "How can they beleive that?"
In college I had a poly-sci professor who was very middle of the road and even handed with information on the government and the parties. One of the most important things I learned from him was the philosophy of the two parties. When you honestly look at each party from their philosophy, it's difficult to think badly of either one. They each have their view of what America should be and there is no right or wrong.
DEmocrates stand on the principle that since all men are created equal, it is important for this country to insure all people have a totally equal footing to accomplish that equality. To that end, there must be government programs to bring everyone to that equal footing. Education, economics, houseing, health, etc must not only be available but those who have difficulty must be given more help/aid so they can become equal.
Republicans believe that all men are created equal and if one truely believes that, then every person can accomplish what ever anyone else can accomplish. The people need to be free to accomplish this for themselves. Self motivation and independence is stressed and giving hand outs or hand ups by their very nature implies inequality. It instills a sense of low and high status to have programs which give preference to some, and not to others, rewarding those who can't or won't work to be equal in their lives. Giving no credit or rewards to those who, by their sheer effort, accomplish anything.
Both of these concepts are valid and could be the mandate of the country. Both have thier good and bad points. For me, it made it easier to respect those who were of a different party because I could see value in either philosophy.
Those who believe we need to make sure the government helps those who are not as well off as others can point to people who, when given a little help, have succeeded greatly. Those who believe it's up to the individual to make their own way can point to those who have come from the worst beginings and exceled to great heights on their own. So both have their principals.
OF course this definition of the two parties is a very bare bones one and the parties have much more in thier plateforms. But this is the core and it really shows the greatness of American to juggle these two concepts for 200 yrs. Isn't America great!

Off and Running
I seldom explain my poetry but do usually offer a short line or two that explains what thought caused my mind to form the words I put to paper. I have met only two people in my life who I thought might not be spiritual. I believed they hated life...they hated themselves. Spiritual people know what I mean and so most of you will understand. It is ego that ruins the idea of God for me. Some of my family thinks that there is no God. Some of my family thinks there is a God. We discuss it from time to time. It's no big deal. We all love each other ... we are family. It is hard, here, not seeing a face or touching a hand or looking at each other's eye's and seeing that we are all spiritual people and, really, I believe we are one big family. Thinking that, I love you all like family and talk as if we are. There is no ill intent to what I say. I am not trying to change or diminish anyone or attack an Entity that brings my family members peace because I care about the feelings of all people. I like the idea that some think God is real.
I wrote that all faiths matter. They do, I think. In my immediate family the trouble always comes when a sister or uncle or other family member forgets that they believe in God, or don't, and are doing God's work or are the same as everyone in nature and replaces God or nature with ego. When that happens emotion always replaces thought and feelings inevitably get hurt.
When I write my words come out fast. I wrote the following poem about the thoughts of something said by a lady in the other group who wished that Native Americans had been allowed to live freely as they wanted to and then turned around and said that God demanded of us to wipe out cultures that were evil. Those words hurt me to my core. As soon as I was done with my poem I sent a copy of my work to a colleague who said few would see what I was saying. She is older and much wiser than me and she is right most of the time. She was right this time. It is a poem not denouncing God but denouncing ego. Do you see it?
One civilization killing off another because of a different belief system is nothing new. I wonder why some folks are so scared of folks who look, act and live differently. I have traveled, met, lived with, and loved people who believed differently than me. I have only killed because my government told me to. That same government was right to ask my Dad to fight. They said, years later, they were wrong to ask me to kill.
Evil Is
The evil in this world that comes
says look at Me I’m good because
I have a savior watching Me
I’m washed in blood so I can see
no end to time. Life never dies?
I’ll be reborn …materialize.
The evil words I say of man
are justified for My god can
beat up your god let’s go to war
everything’s worth fighting for.
If you live wrong, live differently
don’t have My god, don’t look like Me,
If you wear robes, protect your kind
I’ll beat you till you change your mind.
Just ask the Sioux or Navajo
We taught them what they need to know
We’ve showed them how to be set free,
the god that’s right, the way to be…
they’re happier than once they thought
they were… because of what We’ve taught…
don’t pray to earth or winds or sun
pray to My god the only one
that can give peace as we destroy
the way of life you’re fighting for.
We’re better than you think you are
there’s nothing not worth fighting for
My god has said your gods’ a lie
My god has said it’s good we die
I’ll send My might to set you free
So you can start to live like Me.

Just a prefacing word to what I hope will be a fruitful association: I'm not much into 'talking' these days . . . but I almost always 'listen.' So, just because I don't post, doesn't mean I'm not paying attention.
