The Eons Art School

The Eons Art School group is intended to be a learning environment for artists. New students who want to practice and improve their skills, intermediate artists wishing to refine their talent, and more accomplished artists who wish to share their experience and knowledge with others are all welcome here.

Every artist is encouraged to post a Work in Progress (WIP) in the photo section of the home page for the members to comment upon. Member artists looking for tips and instruction are asked to leave this WIP up for a period of time as someone will always respond given a little time to consider or research the issue.

Artists are also invited to instructional graphics on topics ranging from perspective issues, general anatomy, medium techniques and the like.

Discussion is for everyone- professional critiques are invaluable, but so are comments from other artists, experienced or not, who can offer a fresh eye and bring out points that may otherwise be taken for granted. Don't forget the advice given may not always be used for a particular work, but it can still help another who reads the posts.

After a certain period of time has elapsed, the entire conversation, images and dialog will be deleted from the general area and preserved in the “Files” section on the left side of the home page as a case instruction manual for anyone, at any time, to ponder at their own pace.

Be welcomed, and participate.

When Help Is Needed

Whenever anyone, anywhere, for whatever reason, has asked for my assistance, be it '41 and his wife, the Women's Memorial, or Jason Plite's mom, or my country, I have answered unconditionally with my art and with my energy, and with my body. I was brought up to be a "giver" and it has always given me pleasure.

This is going to be difficult to write. Few of you have been taken into a personal confidence, and I do not apologize for my actions. But events have taken a new direction and I must therefore reveal something to this entire group, with the hope that you will give me the benefit of the doubt for not disclosing this earlier. And since this is highly personal and I wish to retain my "pride", I will close this to comments after writing it, and will ask you to PM me privately and that you do not "boom" this message. Most of you know that in the "real world" I am a very private person.

One morning in February, I awoke to find three of my teeth on my pillow, my throat was extremely sore and I had what appeared to be a "crested wave" under my tongue. I saw my GP that afternoon. He immediately sent me to a specialist and after biopsies, cultures, and all that other very expensive testing, it was determined that I needed a bit of radiation and a dose of chemotherapy.

After contemplating the VA health care system which was rejected immediately and Maine is too far from Bethesda, I chose my course of action. I've never been able to afford health insurance, and well... you can imagine what it costs to fight mouth and throat cancer. However, luckily, it was caught at an early stage. And I was in "feast time" artistically, and thought I could afford it as long as commissions came in. What I didn't realize, was that it would consume all of my savings relatively quickly.

Well, after more than a month of being unable to speak in tones louder than a whisper, after ingesting gallons of soup and yogurt, drinking pomegranate juice until I peed red, and swallowing more pills than I have ever taken in my life, and after a simple out patient procedure, I was able to talk loudly again, the pain was gone, and I was told by my doctors "to relax" (ha, fat chance of that!). For the next months, I was scheduled for additional rounds of MRIs, CAT scans "just in case"...

Finally, in August, I was told that "I dodged a serious bullet" (graci de Deus), that the form of cancer I had was not caused by cigarettes (but from something entirely different which apparently only affects males... and therefore easier to cure... just before I went to California.

I returned able to chew Angelo's marvelous beef jerkey and also in serious debt. But I had a few more commissions to complete, not nearly enough, but enough to make payments on all of these bills. And I was able to obtain quite a few more in September. However, in the past two weeks, all but one of these commissions have canceled, due, I suppose to the economic uncertainty we all face, leaving me in a real bind. I need to raise some cash immediately, no later than October 10th, or my "house of cards" will tumble.

Due to my nature, I try to come up with creative solutions for problems. I rejected, and will always reject the notion of taking public assistance as long as I am capable of painting. This is a "non negotiable" aspect of my personality. I've asked friends for personal loans, offered sweat equity to former patrons with no success- again I'm sure, due to their own economic uncertainty.

And so, I am going to offer this group a "creative solution" and hope that you will assist me in my own time of need, but it has to be "my way". I will trade to ten of you,- an unframed oil pastel, the subject is of your choice- be it a landscape, seascape, family portrait, you need only to name it. You may do with it what you desire- put it up for auction, donate it to your local hospital, or put it on your wall. The size of the painting will be my choice, and I will send with it a notarized letter of authenticity... for $200 (approximately 1/10 of my usual fee). That's all I need right now.

The additional work will keep my mind occupied on what gives me the most pleasure, creating beautiful works of art, and the amount will see me clear until my next contracted commission which, as sure as the sun rises in the East, will occur soon.

I want to thank you for reading all the way to here. Once I determine that sufficient time has passed, or when 10 of you have contacted me, I will delete this message.

Update on the Urphan Works Act

A friend of mine just received this from Joe Lieberman and I'm sharing it with you:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008 (S. 2913), which was introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT). As you may have already heard, on September 29, 2008, the Senate unanimously passed this measure and sent it to the U.S. House of Representatives for consideration.

The Orphan Works Act would limit the legal liability imposed on the user of a copyrighted work if they can demonstrate that, after making a good faith effort, they were unable to locate the copyright's owner. If the infringer can demonstrate such good faith, the copyright's owner would only be able to claim reasonable compensation, which the bill defines as the amount a willing seller and willing buyer of the work would have agreed to with respect to the infringed work prior to its first being used. This effectively would exempt the infringer from paying damages or attorney fees. The legislation was prompted by concerns that many academics and creators chose not to use such "orphan works" because they fear having to pay significant penalties if the copyright holder discovers the use.

To qualify for the liability protections in the bill, the user must conduct a diligent search for the owner and file a "Notice of Use" with the U.S. Copyright Office (USCO) before using the work. The user must also provide any attribution information they can about the original copyright owner (i.e., if the artist sketched his or her initials on the drawing or if the copyright was owned by a publisher that has since gone out of business) when using the work and affix such works with an "orphan works" symbol to be developed by USCO.

Before passing S. 2913, the Senate adopted an amendment introduced by Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ) that further specified the minimum actions those who wish to use a copyrighted work must undertake when searching for the work's owner. These stringent standards were adopted to address concerns that the bill did not adequately protect artists' intellectual property against infringement. Although similar legislation was introduced in the House, it has not yet passed that chamber.

I understand that this is an important issue to Connecticut's vibrant artistic community, and I appreciate the economic and cultural contributions that artists make to our state. I believe it is critical that a middle ground be struck between allowing the public the opportunity to use and view orphaned works while also properly safeguarding artists' right to control the use of their work. Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind as I continue to follow the progress of this measure. To keep track of development on this legislation, you can go to the "Bill Tracking" service at view link/issues/resources.' rel='nofollow'>view link

Thank you again for sharing your views and concerns with me. I hope you will continue to visit my web site at view link for updated news about my work on behalf of Connecticut and the nation. Please contact me if you have any additional questions or comments about our work in Congress.

Sincerely,
Joseph I. Lieberman
UNITED STATES SENATOR

Oh oh

I'm getting interviewed by the Detroit News on Tuesday. They're
sending a photographer to take pictures of step by step instructions
for a simple Santa gourd for Jocelynn Brown's craft column.
I sent a bunch of press releases out when my group did the state fair
and they saved the info and called me today. I'm not much good at
phone interviews but I'm going to give it my best shot. Pretty scary
and pretty cool. Wish me luck cause I'm already a nervous wreck.

New book cover

A poet asked me to illustrate his new "book"... PJ read it and wasn't impressed with the poetry so maybe the art will help it a bit, and well...it does seem appropriate for this time of year. I posted photos but these are not WIPs
