EarthwatchJohn

I know I mentioned Earthwatch's Beat the Heat Climate Change Campaign earlier (running through October 14), but if you become a member or donate $35 or more, we're now giving away free organic cotton Beat the Heat t-shirts. They're black, super-soft, very cool. And did I mention organic? Just go here to find out more:

Thanks all!

learning a language

I am very much interested in life in Africa, especially Ghana. I am trying to find someone or a book to help me speak frafra language. Anyone know of an english-frafra dictionary available or anything to help me learn?

Traditional Knowledge of African Villages

Just returned from South Africa on Earthwatch's Traditional Knowledge of African Villages expedition. What a wonderful experience! We stayed at The Makuleke Cultural Center which is a bed & breakfast offering a real african village experience-rondaval huts with hot and cold water. The people were warm & wonderful. We conducted research in and around the village and went to Kruger National Park to see the original homeland of the Makuleke. Highly recommended.

Greetings from Balmerbill

I lived in Uganda from 1975 until 1978. I was an underground missionary and was arrested by Idi Amin's secret police (the State Research Bureau). I see at least one other friend here (Mzungu). In 2000 I was able to visit Ethiopia for 8 days as part of a Press Trip. I hope to post some of my diary entries here once in awhile.

Wonderful Memories

I visited Kenya in 1983 on a 17 day safari trip organized by a local Professor where I lived in New York. It was a great trip and I have many wonderful memories and photos of that trip. I don't know much about Earthwatch Africa, but hope to learn all you have to share.

Hi all. I am a third generation South African and know a bit about travelling in Africa. Please feel free to ask any questions about this magnificent continent and I will answer if I can.

Intro

Hi all. Just thought I'd introduce myself. My husband volunteered with a UK organisation and we have been living in southwest Uganda for the last 8 months. Our mission is people-centred.

Not familiar with Earthwatch but looks great from what I've read on this group.

Tennis balls in Samburu

If you make the very wise decision to join Earthwatch projects in Samburu or anywhere else in Africa where you will see and interact with chirldren you should remember to take tennis balls with you. The kids were fascinated with them as they had never seen a bouncing ball before. I was told that the only balls they have are ones which are made from rags which obviously do not bounce. They also like the bright colors. My team took a bag of 10 to a school and the Headmaster was going to parcel them out carefully as he was afraid they would all be gone the first day but I have heard that they were well used and appreciated.

Samburu is magical.
