Welcome to Current Events & Politics

The Amazingly Compact Member Guide

v 1.1
.

1. I expect everyone to act their age. Arguments are fine, insults are not. I allow a little extra latitude for public figures, but not much. Politicians and Political Parties shall henceforth be referred to by their real names only. Multiple violations will result in negative consequences.

1a. Do NOT include any language in your posts that might be interpreted as a threat to others. The Eons Team takes a very dim view of this, and violations may get you booted off of Eons entirely.

2. Just because someone dangles bait in front of your face doesn't mean you have to swallow it. This is not about who gets the last word in or who can be a bigger jerk. Act like your Mama raised you right.

3. Sweeping generalizations such as "all you Republicans" or "those liberals" or whatever are to be avoided. Such generalizations are almost always wrong, and are usually just indirect insults. (See Rule #1 above.)

4. Please do not cross-post. (Place the same message in more than one group) It just wastes space, and reduces the “signal to noise ratio.”

5. When starting a new topic, please place all text beyond the first couple of paragraphs in the first reply.

6. Management retains the Right to delete any post at any time for any reason, in accordance with the Eons Terms of Use.

7. When posting material that is not original to you, articles must not be posted in their entirety, proper credit is to be given, a link to the original site is to be included, and the poster should include a comment of their own.

7a. Per Eons' direction:
- do not post complete articles without written permission from the author. If you have written permission, please state that
- web articles will require a link to the full article.
- non-web references will require "Author, Book Name and publisher" ''Year" and page numbers from which the quote is taken.

8. Over in the Files Section there are several reference pages (HTML pages that your browser can open) Include are:

A Document Reference Page with links to The Constitution, The Federalist Papers, etc.

A Frequent Topic Reference Page

A News Links Page

Feel free to use them or to suggest additions to the page. There is also a page with instructions on how to post links, for those who are not familiar.

Above all, let’s keep it enjoyable!

Obama's Legacy - A Dependent Nation!

Dependence on Government at All-Time High
Patrick TyrrellFebruary 8, 2012 at 9:07 am(25)

The 2012 Index of Dependence on Government, released today, should be a wake-up call for America. Published by The Heritage Foundation for the past 10 years, the Index tracks the growth in government dependence dating back to the early 1960s. This year’s edition shows an alarming trend. Among the most troubling facts:
One in five Americans—the highest in the nation’s history—relies on the federal government for everything from housing, health care, and food stamps to college tuition and retirement assistance. That’s more than 67.3 million Americans who receive subsidies from Washington.
Government dependency jumped 8.1 percent in the past year, with the most assistance going toward housing, health and welfare, and retirement.
The federal government spent more taxpayer dollars than ever before in 2011 to subsidize Americans. The average individual who relies on Washington could receive benefits valued at $32,748, more than the nation’s average disposable personal income ($32,446).
At the same time, nearly half of the U.S. population (49.5 percent) does not pay any federal income taxes.
In the next 25 years, more than 77 million baby boomers will retire. They will begin collecting checks from Social Security, drawing benefits from Medicare, and relying on Medicaid for long-term care.
As of now, 70 percent of the federal government’s budget goes to individual assistance programs, up dramatically in just the past few years. However, research shows that private, community, and charitable aid helps individuals rise from their difficulties with better success than federal government handouts. Plus, local and private aid is often more effectively distributed. view link

Federal Court Overturns CA on Same Sex Marriage

Newt isn't happy about this decision. It depletes the pool of women he might marry in the future.

A federal appeals panel in San Francisco ruled Tuesday that California’s Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, a decision that could lead to the Supreme Court’s consideration of the controversial social issue.

By a 2 to 1 vote, the panel overturned the proposition, which was approved by 52 percent of the state’s voters in 2008 and amended the state’s Constitution to limit marriage to a man and a woman.

Union boss says "life's not fair"

Check out Vinny Giordano. He's the 1/2 Million $$$ per year head of the New Jersey Education Association ... that would be the teacher's union.

He opposes vouchers so that parents could use to send their kids to a better school...

Host: They can't afford to pay, you know that. Some of these parents can't afford to take their child out of these schools.

Giordano: Life's not always fair and I'm sorry about that.

Translated: Don't mess wit da teecher union!

Ginsburg to Egypt - Don't Use US Constitution!!!

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I thought the US had one of the best constitutions in the world - Not so according to Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg who is sworn to uphold our constitution. She told Egyptian TV our constitution is old and out of date - they should use the constitution of South Africa, Canada or The Europen Union to write their constitution. Making this up??? No - here is the link with a video of her interview. view link

Now we know what she thinks of the document she is supposed to make sure is enforced, can she be trusted to judge it fairly based on her opinons?
